Local gun dealers say that Wisconsin's new concealed carry law has led to increased interest in handgun ownership and could help drive gun sales in coming months.
Gov. Scott Walker signed the state's concealed carry bill into law July 8 in Rothschild. The law takes effect Tuesday when residents can apply for licenses to carry concealed weapons of all sorts -- guns, knives and stun guns.
Central Wisconsin Firearms opened in late August in downtown Wausau and business has been booming from the get-go, said store manager Jim Clark. He estimated that 40 percent of customers who have purchased guns did so as the result of the new law and he expects more sales after the law takes effect.
"Most of the time, (concealed carry customers) bought a gun because they feel safer if they have something to defend themselves with," Clark said.
