This afternoon, students from all over DC joined forces with the Occupy DC movement in a fight against exhausting amounts of student loans. Today, students are faced with a startling amount of debt with no secure job to pay it off. Students in this movement are angered that big corporate executives got a bailout but student loans are not being forgiven for starving recent graduates. To express their frustration and demand change, Howard and George Washington University student leaders began firing up hundreds in McPherson Square.

Students marched past the White House and through Freedom Plaza en route to the Sallie Mae corporate headquarters. The crowd gained followers as hundreds of students demonstrated their frustration towards the enormous amount of debt they are burdened with. To send a clear message to Sallie Mae, protestors taped signed petitions onto the wall outside its corporate building. Leaders organized students to block off all entrances to the building in an effort to encourage Sallie Mae representatives to speak with them. Students peacefully guarded the entrances as police officers attempted to let employees out of the building.

Ms. Freedom, a senior politics student at Howard, spoke to the crowd about her issues with student loan debt. Many cheered as she exclaimed, “Higher education costs too much! If you do not have the means to get knowledge then you do not have the means to get power and create progressive change.”
