(Milwaukee) County budget panel endorses $2 million jobs program

$2 million plan would train high school grads for trades

..snip..

Milwaukee County would launch its own jobs program using $2 million from the sale of county land and private donations, under a plan endorsed Wednesday by the County Board's budget committee.

The committee's action also would junk County Executive Chris Abele's plan to use the same pot of money for a revolving business loan fund run by a new nonprofit corporation in favor of a fund overseen by elected officials.

The Ready to Work program would train local high school graduates for work in building trades and apprenticing with county and private sector firms. Up to 500 participants would be trained in the first year, according to the designated program vendor, the Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership/Big Step.

The nonprofit firm has helped place local workers on the Marquette Interchange and other major projects. The job training partnership's board includes business and labor leaders.

..end..

Problems in the Milwaukee area are many, and varied, and jobs won't solve all of them. But jobs can solve many is probably the one best thing the County can do to help the People of Milwaukee County. Surely the State won't help the People of Milwaukee as long as Walker is at the helm. You can help solve that problem here...

Having accountability for the money is nice too; Abele's "revolving business loan fund" sounds lame.
