3. How are we any different from those Republican debate audiences?
We love blood and death every bit as much as they do....just as long as 'our' side gets the credit. Flame away at me, I do not care. The proof is right there in your picture. We, as a party, are no better after all. Dance a jig on a man's grave and congratulate yourself: You just obliterated our claim to a moral high ground.

4. I respectfully disagree...
This "man" wasn't much of a man... and yes, I'm sorry, but I didn't mind when Hitler died either.

12. Who gets to decide who is a human being and deserves human rights?
I agree, we are no better than republicans when we cheer assassination.

... I'll have the fricasseed runt with a side of weak sauce.

Obliterated WHAT claim? We've been slithering below the high moral ground for a long, long time.

One could view the OP as a critique of 'Merica's self-proclaimed status as WorldCop.

17. I know that. Also, that is what John Wilkes Booth said when he shot Lincoln.
Timothy McVeigh was wearing a T-shirt with those words on it when he was arrested.

But thanks for the unnecessarily lesson anyhow.

8. Bill Hicks said it best:
"Oh no! The world's lost another moron! Oh Heavens to Betsy, the world's lost another miserable water-headed imbecile!"

Or something like that.

I can't BELIEVE you'd be shedding tears over Colonel Kaddafi's grave...

That's it, you win. Here's the cake. Take it. Go ahead, just take it.

14. He was talking about a suicide, not an execution aided by foreign powers.
Kindly don't drag St. Hicks' name into this if you don't know the origin of the quote. (Hint: it was a drug-related joke.) He certainly wasn't a fan of America's "Big Swinging Dick" foreign policy.

Now, a "what does G13 do?" joke would be highly appropriate here.

20. I knew the origin of the quote; don't see how that makes any diff, Biff.
Context is often important, sometimes essential; but not in this case.

In this case, I was using the quote in its general sense, i.e., the world has lost a person who offered it little or no real value whatsoever.

In Chadeffee's case (my own spelling, cuz what the hell, EVERYBODY's doin' it) the value he offered was even worse than little or nil; he was a rich crazy megalomaniacal dictator who caused lots and lots of innocent people, those of his own country and others, to suffer and die, and he was blithely unaware of this to the very end, apparently.

And while it's true that Bill was NOT a fan of American Empirism, if he were here now I'm reasonably sure he'd be on the "FUCK 'IM!" side of this present ridiculous argument...

I mean, Bill DID suggest that we shoulda dropped Bush Sr. on Iraq, rather than all those bombs... didn't he?

Yes, he did. Yes indeedy do.

21. OK, I'm willing to cut a lot of slack because you're a Hicks fan, but ...
Look at some of the last things he focused on--e.g., Waco--and on the overarching theme of misuse of authority through the means of violence.

Yes, even against assholes like David Koresh or Kwahdaffy. ;)

Arrest them, try them, execute them if that's the law of the land; but the US should keep a good arm's length from extrajudicial killings, IMO.

22. I can't disagree with any of that...
It just seems like the world's gotten so crazy lately; and I think a lot of people, myself included, feel relieved somewhat at the prospect of a known mass-murderer and long-term brutal dictator finally meeting his end this week, whatever the details involved.

Maybe it's not the BEST face we can show the world nowadays, but a lot of us have been under such stress, for so long...

Too, I always figure a little humor can't really hurt anything, and may provide a bit of harmless catharsis for some...

I'm glad, though, that we can agree on something; this recent event has proven so divisive on these boards, and I'd certainly prefer a little less of that, as I'm guessing many others may agree...

It's funny how we all can agree to be so disagreeable, so quickly and so certainly, when it comes to issues of such finality... I guess black humor isn't everyone's cup of tea.

One thing I am certain of, though, is that the world WILL survive the loss of Kaddafi, just as it survived the loss of his many victims. Somehow, we'll find a way to go on, I just know we will.

heh heh...

Peace to all. Really. Namaste.

10. Anyone who has any sympathy for that murderous thug should spare a thought for his victims.
But no....it's way too easy to pretend he wasn't the batshit crazy, murdering, megalomaniacal shitheel that he was. There comes a point when, if you bend over any further backwards, you break your back.

The greatest conceit is to try to paint AMERICAN law on the customs and practices of the Libyans, who have lived under tyranny for almost half a century. They're not us--they have their own traditions, and offing that bastard, in the prosecution of a revolutionary war, as they did, is one of theirs.

It's not for us to demand that they use OUR system of laws while they're fighting their own revolutionary war.

His death could have been quicker, but it was precisely what he deserved.

I got up to 5 recs on this thread... but it's fallen to 3 overnight.

Man, there sure are a LOT of Kaddafi supporters on DU...

I guess I should've done an IN MEMORIAM thread instead.

24. I had a cat that looked just like that one for over 20 years.
Great cat--like a dog in a lot of ways, and smart as well as extremely social. It's not my gif, though--I swiped it years ago. Possession is 9/10th, as they say!

19. Well, I wouldn't go THAT far...
...just as I wouldn't go as far as a previous commentor:

"We love blood and death every bit as much as they do....just as long as 'our' side gets the credit. Flame away at me, I do not care. The proof is right there in your picture. We, as a party, are no better after all."

I just don't think any such blanket observations contain even the slightest hint of a great truth within them.

Nuance, people, nuance... context, nuance, timing, etc, etc... and of course, etc.
