Japan, 6 months later.

--------------------------
In memory of the 20,000 people who were killed by the tsunami, I offer this thread as a hopeful reminder of the power to overcome. I hope people can avoid making this a place to cast snarky remarks about people glowing or irradiation, etc.

TOKYO (AP) -- Last Sunday was the six-month anniversary of the day the massive earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeast coast.
Some 20,000 people are dead or missing. More than 800,000 homes were completely or partially destroyed. The disaster crippled businesses, roads and infrastructure. The Japanese Red Cross Society estimates that 400,000 people were displaced.
Half a year later, there are physical signs of progress.
Much of the debris has been cleared away or at least organized into big piles. In the port city of Kesennuma, many of the boats carried inland by the tsunami have been removed. Most evacuees have moved out of high school gyms and into temporary shelters or apartments.
Last week the Kyodo News agency distributed an amazing group of combination photographs showing three scenes. The first scene is right after the earthquake and tsunami hit, then three months later and finally, how the scene looks now. (

13. That's the Japanese. When there's work to be done EVERYONE chips in.
In public schools, children are the janitors.
They are responsible as a group for keeping their own room clean.
It's part of the training they get that allows their society to pull together so strongly when the need arises.

5. Such an achievement. I really admire that aspect of the Japanese spirit-- working together,
getting things restored as quickly as possible. I love it that they still believe in good government and make it happen where they can. They haven't demonized government services-- they have shown respect for what public workers can do.

I wonder what Joplin looks like today...

10. Amazing time lapse photos

of healing and cleanup

Though on dialup I had to wait a while for them to load, they were well worth seeing.

The pics show the mighty might of the human spirit.

Thanks for sharing them, Bonobo

11. And the 3rd picture in each set is from a month ago!
No doubt even more progress has been made since then.

My hat is off to the resilience of the people living in the megadisaster areas. This surprisingly rapid restoration is the fruit of the Japanese spirit of "Chikara wo awasete, ganbarimashou" (Let's pool our strength and give it our best effort)

14. Some of the "after" pictures are eerily similar to U.S. neighborhoods devestated by job losses.
A few structures standing amidst empty streets and cleared foundations.
