Rick Scott (Fl. Gov) is one huge POS!
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 06:29 AM by trumad
And I can't wait to help campaign against his reelection.

Gov. Rick Scott has posted the salaries of employees at all of Florida's 11 public universities — a move some faculty leaders say is pointed at professors and meant to make universities appear wasteful.

A spokesman for Scott said the online posting was simply an attempt to be transparent about how public money is spent.

<snip>
But faculty leaders such as Tom Auxter, president of United Faculty of Florida, pointed out that the database is misleading in that it doesn't attempt to explain why about 20 professors make more than $500,000 a year.

He and others worry the public will focus on the high dollar amounts and overlook that fact that the average pay of professors ranges between $60,000 and $90,000, depending on the school, according to the American Association of University Professors.

Many of the higher-paying professors, Auxter said, are working physicians who teach in the medical schools. Some professors are paid more because they also have administrative positions.

Some are paid large salaries because they bring in significant amounts of money through grants and other revenue sources for research. These other sources often provide at least part of their income, a fact that can easily be overlooked when reading the governor's online database.

"My feeling is he is on a systematic campaign of distorting the evidence about higher education funding to serve his own purposes," Auxter said.

2. Florida salaries have always been public...
It's just that instead of going to the library or whatever, he put them online. Some people who checked his database have found a number of errors already.

Most professor salaries are lower than national averages - but it varies by school and discipline. There's no big deal here. The Chronicle of Higher Education and AAUP release annual reports on salaries by institution and discipline.

A few are overpaid, but most career faculty have not gotten raises regularly so new people are hired at almost the same salaries as multi-year experienced professors.

Scott's real agenda is to privatize state universities and provide a way for his business friends to profit from state dollars. He goes after age-old targets with sound bites and stupidity.

In Florida, even at large universities, it's a minority of faculty who are tenured because more and more are part-time or adjunct or visiting. Even then, all tenure does is provide legal due process if someone is fired so that there has to be a good reason to fire long-term employees. There's a long history here of "continuing contracts", "tenure", and collective bargaining contracts. Scott has already found out that he can't wave a wand and undo decades of legal precedent, constitutional amendments, and multi-year contracts. He's spending more in court already than he could possibly save with some nutty new direction.

Scott is doing his usual thing and trying to stir up imaginary issues when he doesn't usually have a clue what he's talking about. His MO is getting old already.

6. This would be SOP for Scott.
If you can solve problems, stir up imaginary ones. "Hey look over there, a rabbit!"

I too am going to have a great deal of fun campaigning against his reelection. Although....I'm not entirely convinced he will run again.

I have no doubts about the size of his ego and his need for power.

Look at his attack on the UF Anthropology Dept last week. Now this.

12. How much did Scott make as the CEO of a crooked medical company?
Whatever it was, that's how he was overpaid.

14. as CEO of Columbia Hospital
"Following the raids, the Columbia/HCA board of directors forced Scott to resign as Chairman and CEO.<21> He was paid $9.88 million in a settlement. He also left owning 10 million shares of stock worth over $350 million"

Then Columbia went on to pay penalties in excess of $600M.

What a crook he is.

17. A huge POS he is.
If this doesn't mount a solid anti-Rick Scott effort I don't know what will. Surely the people of Florida, Ohio and Wisconsin have had enough of fucking Republican governors.
