Study Finds Obama Received "Unrelentingly Negative" Media Coverage From A Supposedly Adoring Media

October 17, 2011 7:50 pm ET

Conservative media figures have frequently argued that President Obama has received favorable coverage from a supposedly adoring media, but a new study from Pew finds that "negative assessments of Obama have outweighed positive by a ratio of almost 4-to-1." While some observers (including Media Matters) have in the past questioned the usefulness of similar studies, conservative have cited past Pew reports to portray the rest of the media as biased.

Pew Research Finds Obama Had Most Negative Media Coverage Of Any 2012 Presidential Candidate

Pew: Obama "Has Suffered The Most Unrelentingly Negative Treatment Of All" From The Media. From Pew's summary of its study media coverage of the first phase of the 2012 presidential race:

One man running for president has suffered the most unrelentingly negative treatment of all: Barack Obama. Though covered largely as president rather than a candidate, negative assessments of Obama have outweighed positive by a ratio of almost 4-to-1. The assessments of the president in the media were substantially more negative than positive in every one of the 23 weeks studied. In no week during these five months was more than 10% of the coverage about the President positive in tone. {Pew, 10/17/11}

1. NO, I am NOT excusing him
He should have known that the only way to gain power and respect was to confront the right head on, BUT...

Anyone who thinks that both the MSM, and for that matter, a large part of the supposed "alternative media" did not have the knives out for Obama from day one, is either deluding themselves, or outright lying. The right, nothing needs to be said, and yes, certain people like Huffington and Hamsher intended to punish Obama because he was not St. Hillary "the Liberal messiah that helped write Liberalism's death Warrant", or the supposed far left that wanted St. Dennis "I refuse to run outside of Cleveland, but act like I should be President."

3. Quite a difference from when that same media ginned up a +90% approval rating for Bush the Idiot

Wouldn't you say?

They did such a swell job even a lot of liberals were referring to that simpleton as, "My president."

2. Media is part of the problem.
I am really happy to see Media Matters finally running with this story. Hopefully it will have some life off.

5. Well, plenty of that negative shit was echoed right here, I noticed.
It has caused me on more than one occasion to flip through those cards to see which one had been played, bluntly.

9. Exactly. There was so much of it here that it made Huffington Post look downright Obama-friendly
and they're anything BUT.

And that's just sad for a site that's supposed to be supportive of Democrats. But all I saw posting were 100% anti-Obamanuts.

6. The goal is to drive down DEM turnout, and increase GOP turnout at the polls

They push 2 OBAMA BAD memes.

1) They have a right wing pundit clam that Obama is a socialist.

2) And then they have a disgruntled liberal clam Obama is a corporatist.

They don't care which of these positions you accept, just so long as you internalize the core message ... Obama bad.

12. Sadly, I have posted this as an OP a few times ... you can probably guess the response ...
Those liberals here who dislike Obama and want a primary scream bloody murder. They claim that those who believe version #1 of the "Obama Bad" meme are stupid right wing nuts ... and then they defend the "Obama is a corporatist" meme because that is the one they have internalized.

I will probably bring this topic back up once the "Primary Obama" fantasy dies its natural death. Once that happens, the "Obama Bad" meme liberal version #2 should start to lose steam here on DU.

I do encourage other to point this out in threads they see where it applies.

11. Yes, and that is the purpose of several vocal and highly prolific DU'ers. Drive down DEM turnout.

I do not know what their intended endgame is.
