Thousands took to the street protest about the financial markets, the banks, the spending cuts or the precarious employment situation.
The city centre was brought to a standstill as dozens of thousands of people packed into the streets between Cibeles and Sol. One local policeman is reported to have commented, ‘They have reason to protest and we have to work as that’s our job’.
Several marches from across the city converged together. One from the NE had the slogan, ‘When those at the bottom move, those at the top fall’, while the main slogan for the demonstrations was ‘United for Global Change’.
In Barcelona the City Hall estimated that

there were 60,000 demonstrators on the street and taking part in the protest march.
