But if they don't want to hire them, or, for that matter, let go somebody who has

Any employer who even asks a job applicant about marital status is begging to get sued.

9. Longtime friend of mine lost several jobs because of his cuckoo s-o.

Of course, she was his wife at the time. She'd actually call up my friends bosses and YELL at them on the phone, telling them that they needed to pay him more or let him come home more often (he was a salaried managerial employee and generally worked 60-70 hours a week without overtime).

When he finally divorced her, she cost him another job when she started calling his office constantly to harass him. When he blocked her number, she started calling his boss and the front desk secretary, accusing him of everything from being a pedophile, to being a drug user and wife beater, to claiming that he'd been embezzling money from the company. His boss got sick of it and let him go. He ended up having to pull a restraining order, which she was later arrested for violating, in order to stop off her behavior.

IIRC, she was later diagnosed with some genuine mental problems. Last I heard, she's hooked on meth and crazy as ever.

And my friend? He still runs into people in his field every now and then who remember him as the "guy with the crazy wife." You can't help but wonder whether that impacts his ability to get new jobs.
