2. But we're supposed to vote for them because the other is worse.
At least that's what all the cheerleaders here say.

3. The appetite for power makes hypocrites of many.

:puke:

Indeed, it demonstrates why I subscribe to a deontological ethic (e.g. Kant's Categorical Imperative) and NOT a consequentialist ethic.

The ends do NOT justify the means ... and it takes an imbecile to deny the repeated lessons that show that truth.

9. The only way to effect change is to keep
things the way they are. Appeasement is the ultimate resistance.

11. Leon Trotsky once said" The ends may justify the means,if there's something to justify the ends."
I think anyone subscribes to a consequentialist viewpoint must seriously consider if there is something to justify the ends. What are the ends in this case? Keeping Republicans out of power no matter what democrat you must support. Those ends do not justify the means of all the lives that these bluedogs will harm with their right-wing agenda.

10. the others aren't worse?
Put another 20 blue dogs in the House and Speaker Pelosi would never let this bill come to a vote.

Just out of curiousity, what percentage of the other party voted for this bill? 99.44%? 97%?

As it stands now, there are two salient facts.

1. In the Republican House, this bill was going to pass anyway
2. the meaningless votes these Democrats cast will play well in their districts

and two more salient facts

3. it will never pass the Democratic controlled Senate
4. it will never be signed by the DLC President

are the issues that should separate Democrats from
Republicans.

8. I think that is what a lot of INDEPENDENT liberals can't seem to wrap their minds around
Edited on Fri Oct-14-11 09:26 AM by NNN0LHI
Had there not been a Republican controlled congress to begin with a bill like this would have never been introduced, much less voted on.

It is kind of like the chicken and the egg thing.

12. What I don't understand is why the Democratic party doesn't just throw these folks out.
Is there any standard at all for being a big-D Democrat besides bureaucracy? Could the Koch brothers join the Democratic party?

13. Parties don't seem to mean much these days.
When speaking of their party identities, most people seem to be saying one of two things:

Republicans: I'm a fascist Calvinist.

Democrats: I don't hear voices.

25. This sad but utterly true post would make an awesome political cartoon.
This is where we are, nutty fascist versus the sane enough to not need to be institutionalized.

32. One party seems to be about 98% batshit insane ...
... and the other about 40%.
Even though they should be institutionalized, I don't think Congress should be the institution.

15. Vote for the lesser of 2 evils, then wash your hands. It's better than nothing.
The fact that people sat on their hands in 2010 is the main reason the House of Representatives is the disaster it is now.

You get no praise from me for being indecisive.

Brain-dead "conservatives" disgust me ... no matter what label they sport.
"Get the government off our back" and into our uterus?? What total hypocritical nonsense.
Whine about birth certificates and "Shariah Law" ... but enact "laws" which are identical to the repressions of Shariah. What total hypocritical nonsense.
I hate authoritarianism ... and STUPID authoritarianism even more.
These people shouldn't be elected to ANY office, let alone "Representative."
