makes it sound like they are perfectly normal human beings trying like hell to deal with an intolerable reality caused by the men they married.

Which I don't believe for a second.

If they "cope" in any way, it's likely not with the situation they find themselves in. It's more likely they are trying to cope with their OWN issues. Issues that cause them to choose the men they do.

Because if they didn't have issues, they wouldn't be with those guys to begin with.
