Soap opera off air in Venezuela after gov't demand
A Venezuelan television station has stopped airing a Colombian soap opera after government regulators demanded its removal saying the program was offensive and denigrating to Venezuela as a country.

The soap opera "Chepe Fortuna" features an unscrupulous secretary named "Venezuela" who has a dog called "Little Hugo," an apparent reference to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

"What disrespect for Venezuela!" Chavez said in a speech to lawmakers Saturday. "That soap is so horrible!"

The private TV channel Televen did not air the program on Friday after regulators demanded the show be dropped from the lineup.

2. Why are Americans so fixated on domestic issues in Venezuela?
Most countries do have broadcasting standards and I'm not seeing how Venezuela is any different in this regard....

because it is such a contrast to the 30 years of rightwing corporatist tools that have been our leaders.

16. How would you know if it happened? You wouldn't...
Just like I bet those who fixate on every little detail when it comes to Venezuela don't care less when it comes to countries that are seen by the US as allies, like Israel and Australia, that both have draconian censorship ,and in the case of the former, attempts to shut down human rights groups that criticise the government.

When it comes to censorship in the US, you should read 'Manufacturing Consent' by Noam Chomsky. It's a great book and explains how in the US the media self-censors...

But that damned movie about Senator Kerry made it, didn't it?

19. It was "The Reagans"
And it wasn't pulled by FCC pressure, but CBS bowing to boycott threats from the Brent Bozell types. That was back when right-wing groups were demanding everything in the post 9/11, Janet Jackson tit-bearing era and getting it.

I don't remember any film being made about John Kerry. When was this?

pressure.

The "documentary" about Senator Kerry was "Stolen Honor" and it was used to attack him and his service during the campaign.

But, hey, it was just a political group putting it out with the help of the corporate media.

edit to making it "putting it out" rather than "putting out" though I think the original, Freudian "putting out" is probably more accurate. *snort*

I thought someone made an actual fictionalized movie about Senator Kerry.

If I recall correctly, that was never aired either after similar political pressure.

of (Huguito)" the hand is glimpsed. Just as Bernie GOLDDIGGER and other wingnuts claim that us Libs (and i ARE one, whatsoever detractors choose to fabricate) are brainwashed; recite "talking points" from above; are dupes and robots and other such ventriloquists' dummies ...

The only junk I read about Huguito comes from his followers here and the anti-him threads here, and it is the discussion or flamewars HERE that I note MORE, rather than the o.p. items the threads are supposedly about. The secret is that the closest I come to OBSESSING on the subject of him is his bombastic, a-hole, THUG personality that I detest in him as much as I do in wingnuts. And what can I say, the non-stop defense of his every breath and act by his followers here is just a popcorn spectacle!1

But I say again, I'm admiring the restraint here!1 Wowie!1

If you don't hail Chavez as the greatest world leader going and better than Obama, you are not a TRUE progressive. It's like how if you don't have the requisite amount of Smiths albums in your music collection you aren't cool.

If you don't buy into the media reporting of Chavez, the same media we're told to ignore when it criticizes Obama, then you don't have the requisite amount of Bruce Springsteen albums.

This is why I listen to black metal...both the Smiths and Bruce suck ass.
