When my husband lost his job almost 3 weeks ago he also lost his health insurance. We recently received the cobra bill, to cover my husband and my son it will cost over $900 a month. Mind you, this is VERY shitty insurance. My son is in college and can get insurance through school, still shitty, but covered if anything big happens. So the amount would drop to over $500 a month.
So, out of the whopping $327 he gets a week in unemployment and my small disability check, we're supposed to be able to afford this. Along with the mortgage, food, elec, etc.
He had a heart attack last October (it'll be a year on the 13th) so there are those meds too. He had to have a sleep study done, which he did. Turns out he's really bad. Stops breathing every 60 seconds..lasting anywhere from one second to 30. He's woke in the middle of the night gasping for air--main reason for sleep study--and it seems like forever before he can breath again. They told him he's another heart attack waiting to happen.
So he needs to get a cpap machine. It's literally a matter of life and death. So I looked into finding help getting one, either very low cost or free--you know all those charities the repugs hoot and holler about? I found ONE awake in America org. I looked into the states high risk insurance--lower payments--you have to be uninsured for at least 6 months...WTF?!?!
So now we have to decide to we find a way to pay at least one months cobra--probably getting backed up on other bills-or play Russian roulette every night while he sleeps. Earlier this year, and woman my daughter works with husband died from sleep apnea--he was younger than my husband and had never had a heart attack.
I know I'm not the only one in the situation. Millions of people are living this very same nightmare. The fact that so many people just don't care is heartbreaking. America's attitude has become everyone for themselves, and I've got mine you can go to hell.
The many are being crushed by the few. The dollar is more important than a human life. This is the world we're giving our children?
I remember when I was a teenager. There was a family that lived in my neighborhood, and the husband was a construction worker and would always get laid off in the winter. Every winter a collection was taken for them, meals were prepared and frozen for them, we helped each other. It was like that when any family needed help, we all pitched in. What happened?
I'm proud of all the "occupy" cities/states that are happening. I'm happy we're no longer being silent..I hope they hear us.
Thanks for letting me vent.
