Momma said "some people just weren't raised right."
A man died. A flawed man, like all of us. But he died and his family is mourning. It is unfortunate some feel the need to take a moment out of their day to take a dump on that. It shows a lack of maturity and class.

Give the mans family, his fans, and others (like me who like his achievements and disliked his flaws) a moment to celebrate the good he did and the achievements he made during his life.

It reminds me of another flawed man who died (violently), John Lennon. Had he died yesterday, would DU be filled with thousands of posts denigrating the man and his achievements because he was as human as the rest of us?

Like momma said, "some people just weren't raised right."

1. I couldn't agree more. Steve Jobs bashed the teachers unions
because it made it impossible to fire bad teachers. I was a union member for 34 yrs and am totally pro-union. I don't think there is any union member who likes the fact that a really bad employee can't be fired, if they are being truthful that is. We had a lot of members in our union that most of us would have liked to see fired. They not only were bad for the company but they made our job harder and gave us a bad name. Let the man rest in peace for his flaws; like you say, we all have them.

14. Link?
I'll be glad to, although I'm not sure if that is true.

There are times that I have read posts of yours and said "Hell YES," and times when I said "WTF?" You will have to decide for yourself if your momma would be proud or not at this moment.

I just think a little space would be a good idea. Why start a fight?

Poster #1 didn't say you weren't raised right ....

Ok - I'm confused, not that I expect you to clarify things. It just doesn't seem to be your style.

13. I seriously disliked Jobs position on teachers unions.
Heck anyones position on that, but let's all just give everyone a little space to mourn and then we can move on.

He was flawed and he was brilliant both.

Give a few days before you draw the knives.

16. Thanks.
I just think people should be allowed to show their respect in any way that they need to. He still has a family and friends and he was well know and admired by some and despised by many.

At a funeral, when my mom first said those word, they were to me. I was about to pipe up and complain about how the dead person in question had been a real asshole to everyone in creation when she told me not to make her regret raising me. "I raised you better than that" or words to that effect.

"Funerals are for the living so show a little respect for those who are here or shut up."

7. Sorry, but I'm going to say the same things about someone who's dead I'd have said of them alive.
Death doesn't confer sainthood. (I didn't suddenly find nice things to say about Nixon or Reagan either.)

Nixon and Reagan are hardly in the same echelon of accomplishment as a visionary genius of Jobs' caliber.

11. Pfft.
I'd be saying "too bad he's dead, but he was still a vicious anti-Semitic prick" if this were Henry Ford we were talking about.

19. I'm not saying it does.
And you don't have to change your opinion.

But it would be a classy move to let the living have their moment to mourn if they need it. Funerals are for the living. This has nothing to do with Jobs - he's gone. It has to do you and me and anyone who feels (for whatever reason) the need to express admiration or regret and the respect we either choose to give the living, or the derision we choose to express.

Do you have the right to say it. Of course, but would some compassion be a bad idea?

9. A man is dead
and his friends and family mourn. Not a time to be out bad mouthing about the guy IMO. Did I care for him? Not particularly, but I am happy for his creativeness and the good things he did bring to the world. Is his company evil? Like most, yes it is. Yet I sit here typing on a Mac, the only Apple product I own and will ever own. Still, the man is dead. He and his friends and family suffered his pain, and his cancer was very painful, and now he is gone and they mourn. Humanity suggests we allow them that without telling them we think he is evil. I have never understood this dynamic of not being kind or polite enough to let it rest while others mourn.

22. Thanks.
What you said was the same thing and it all is important. Just a little restraint until the poor loved ones get him in the ground. Nothing being said now can't be said later so why pile on these very sad people.

I am certain they are smart enough to know it is going on and smart enough to know to ignore it.

It just makes me sad that even in death we can't stop hating each other, if only for a moment.

23. It happens every time.
Anytime one of our best dies there is a group here at DU who have to bash that person long before the body is even in
rigor. If Ghandi had just died today some fool here at DU would be bashing him for something. Nothing new now.

I'm sure someone would find something but Lennon seemed like a peaceful dude with his heart in the right place.

25. Abandoned his first child.
Edited on Fri Oct-07-11 11:29 PM by MedicalAdmin
Abandoned his first wife. Married the woman blamed for breaking up the beatles. Lived with the 1%. Didn't give enough to charity. Rich. White. Wore glasses. Spoke with a funny accent. His music was shitty. His art sucked and was pretentious. He didnt buy union made. He wasn't a union member. I have to pay money for his music. Supported cult members. Was a cult member. I heard from my friend who worked with a guy who once met him that he was an asshole. Rumor has it he once kicked a dog. Sexist. Dissed Jesus once....

Shall I go on? Those looking for fault will find it.

I should mention that I cried when I learned of lennons death. And gosh, I never met him. Go figure. Maybe he meant something to me.
