AL immigration law: personal experience
A friend wants to put up a 60' X 70' pole barn on some land he has here in coastal Alabama.
He's called the two Mexican laborers who have worked for him before.
Needs help in pouring the slab and erecting the building.

"Hardest working guys I've ever seen.", he says.
"And you only have to tell them something once."

He can't reach them and they aren't returning phone calls.
I told him they're gone, moved out of state.
Now he's had to postpone his order with the concrete truck.
He is PISSED.
I don;t think he'll ever cote for another repug.

1. Having visited Alabama
this is one state that did not need this economic shock. Sadly, Republicans can't seem to comprehend how interwoven immigrants are to the American quilt.

2. ...
Wow. I wonder if those two guys realized how indispensable they were. Your friend must have been paying them a mint.

Perhaps he should try the yellow pages...

10. For all I know, they are citizens. It's a bit more complicated.
Or they may have green cards.
My friend doesn't know (and doesn't really care).

But...they may have family members who are here illegally.
I know some of these folks.
Many times the husband is legal, but the wife or other family members living with them aren't.
I have no idea why, but there it is.

Why not U.S. citizens?
Because these guys work cheaper and they work hard.
They show up on time and stay till the boss says "Go home".

11. Suffice it to say--permits not applied for, taxes not paid. Get hurt on this job? Que Lastima!

Speaks for itself.

20. Doesn't sound personal, sounds anecdotal
a story told by a friend. Do you think saying it's personal raises empathy?

they may have green cards.

He doesn't care? Isn't that like every grifter contractor and sweatshop boss out there?

12. Google 'Alabama illegal immigrant law'.
It just passed.
If you give a ride to a hitchhiker and are stopped by law enforcement for some reason and your 'passenger' is an 'illegal' you can be fined.

The 'illegals' can be held without bond and turned over to ICE.

Imagine you're an 'illegal' mom driving home after taking your kid (born HERE) to school and you're pulled over for something.
You might never see your kid again.
At least not until you're both on your way south of the border.
Nice.

14. 'American' workers won't harvest potatoes.
Probably not at any price.
And they won't work for the wages Mexican and Central and South Americans will work for.

19. And I suppose "Americans" won't do roofing??
I own a roofing business in Washington State. Due to Washington granting driver's licenses and giving welfare benefits to illegals we have seen a huge increase in the hispanic population since Arizona passed their immigration law. My two largest local competitors now employ entirely
hispanic crews. They work for minimum wage. The result of this is that
roofing prices have dropped dramatically. Roofing is very hard work and
doing it properly takes skill. I kept my employees wages steady and made less money for my company. It has now reached the point that I can't sustain that and I have had to lower my employees wages just to attempt to stay in business. I have an employee who is hispanic but followed the rules and came here legally. He has great animosity for the illegals who have driven down his standard of living.

Illegals don't just take agricultural jobs. They take alot of the construction jobs and drive down wages. I would also point out that the
quality of my competitors work has decreased. Their employees don't speak English and they have difficulties communicating with them to train them.

As for your not believing how much payroll taxes can be...I pay $4.11
per hour per employee just in workers comp and that's with my 23% discount for being claims free for almost ten years. My employees have to pay $.82 per hour for their share. My competitors who keep their illegals off the books don't have that expense.

Get a clue!

16. The "minimum wage" includes overtime, worker's comp, local, federal taxes, social security match/
deduction, etc.

Put that all together with the hourly minimum of $7.25/hour, and your friend is probably paying less than half of what he'd half to part with for a legal worker.

17. Who said these guys are illegals?
I don't know and neither do you.

So with all $$$ you include, the 'minimum' wage is something around $15/hr.?
I don't think so.

Nobody I know is going to go through all you suggest to get two guys to do 3 days work.
Just won't happen.
