update on my uncle who has barricaded himself in his house and is threatening police and himself
Edited on Fri Jan-14-11 06:11 PM by Robyn66
Thank you all for your care and support. My poor father is just an exhausted mess at the scene right now. We all appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

Its about 20hours now since the stand off began. They have broken every window in the house shooting in tear gas and he wont come out. He was running around yelling how he was going to kill anyone who came near the house and that he was not going to be taken alive. For a while he was on the phone but he turned off the phone. Then it got quite and they have been sitting for like 5 hours without anything going on. So now (I think its the State Police) are bringing in this Tank thing to bust down the door in hopes of bringing him in. THe police are doing everything they can not to hurt him.

The last time he did this he fell asleep and slept it off and went quietly once he woke up. I am hoping this is what happens now. But I don't know what will happen to him after he is arrested. He needs to be in a hospital, and he needs to NOT get his guns back. But every time this happens he is back on the street with his guns really fast. Maybe the big difference this time is he is going to be charged with criminal threatening of a police officer. But the fact still remains the man needs care at a hospital and I don't know if he will get it.

1. I hope he's taken safely and no one hurt.
Has he been diagnosed?

3. I believe so
At least with major depression and he has diabetes and a whole host of other illnesses. I know bipolar disorder runs in the family because my brother and I have it. But he doesn't take his meds all the time. He has had drug and alcohol issues forever.

4. I'm sorry you have to deal with this one
At least when my family members go off their meds and try to self medicate with alcohol they just end up living out of dumpsters. They get scraped up off the street and medicated and they're OK for months or years and then it just happens again. My family doesn't run to guns, only letters to the CIA wrapped in tinfoil (true story).

Your uncle might get some help this time, pink papered for 72 hours for some enforced medication, after which he might be rational enough to keep taking his meds for a while. I hope so.

Maybe the police need to be asked if they'll hold all his guns as evidence, locked up where he can't get them.

7. They'll do the 72 hour hold
Also, if they charge him. tell your dad to insist that the STATE looks into forced committal...

They may do that, and that wicket means no more guns either.

12. THank you for that great information!
I will pass that on to my dad. Hopefully that will work in good ole New Hampshire where we dont DARE take people's guns away! It really pissed me off that you can have a SWAT team at your house TWICE and STILL have your guns in this state!

13. Unfortunately it sounds like he has serious mental problems, and in the US
today, the predominant view is the medieval one: that mental "illness" is a character defect and not a biological disease needing treatment.

Wishing your family the best.
