1. It tells much about those who believe it.
In truth, people don't run down to a gun store to buy a gun when angry and need to be cooled off. Almost all murderers, including first time murderers. have prior convictions and are not able to pass an NICS check, therefore unable to buy a gun from a dealer. The idea expressed by that cartoon is a fiction. Waiting period accomplish nothing, except keep victims from arming themselves if they suddenly need a gun.

"Waiting period? But I'm being stalked now!"

2. Nobody "suddenly needs a gun"
NOBODY.

The Simpsons writers are talking to you, and it went right over your head.

11. Really? How about this real life situation?
A battered woman leave the guy and goes into hiding. He finds out where she is now living and leaves death threat notes on her door. That happened to a woman I once knew. She needed a gun right then, but the Brady waiting period was in effect, so she had to wait for five days. OF course, in your Fantasyland , men like him obey restraining orders.

Her case worked out because I guarded her and her kids for a week until she got her gun. He was eventually arrested and sent to prison for two years.

Here is another real-life situation. A person is on a hunting trip and breaks their gun.

20. No, it isn't. There has even been a SCOTUS decision that says so.
CASTLE ROCK V. GONZALES (04-278) 545 U.S. 748 (2005)
366 F.3d 1093, reversed.

27. No. The Police have no duty to protect YOU (as an individual) ...
they protect society by catching criminals.

This has been upheld by dozens of Supreme Court precendents over the last century.

You have absolutely not right to expect the Police to protect you. If they fail to do so you also have no right to expect compensation. Even if the Police are incompetent or fail to protect you when you accurate describe a threat you are entitled to no protection.

You are responsible for your own protection and a firearms is the most effective method to do so.

28. Why Don't You Complete Your Sentiments?

Here, let me help you:

"If you don't have a firearm and you fail to protect yourself, you're to blame for your own misfortune and are simply out of luck, and you are deserving of no sympathy whatsoever."

(Note to Real World posters: Most Gun Enthusiasts have learned to omit this last part for PR reasons, but it's always simmering, right below the surface.....)

29. Please don't put words in my mouth. It is dishonest and insulting.
If you are a victim of crime the only person to blame is the criminal who committed the violence. PERIOD.

I am just pointing out (the often unknown fact) that the Police have no duty to protect an individual (except one in custody).
Given that the state takes no responsibility for protecting its citizens it is the immoral to deny those same citizens an effective method of self-defense.

Self Defense is a human right.

4. Maybe the waiting periods can be used to check for history of mental illness
I don't know how that would be done, but it seems like a good idea.

7. NICS can check for mental illness. Either there is record or there isn't.
Waiting isn't going to change that.

16. Holy crap. Oregon was (is?) 61,564 names behind.
Apparently, only 1 person in 2008-2009 was mentally ill.

22. So 61,564 people who have been legally determined to have a dangerous mental condition ...
can walk into an Oregon gun store and buy firearms.

Sounds like something important enough to raise hell about.

More info at:
http://www.bradycampaign.org/legislation/backgroundchecks/nics/

Note: I normally do not support the Brady Campaign but I honestly believe that the Brady Act and the NICS background check system the NRA won as a concession are examples of gun legislation that actually accomplish something rather than merely make people feel good.

From 1994 through 2008, 1.8 million attempted firearm purchases were blocked by the Brady background check system. For checks done by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2008, felons accounted for 56 percent of denials and fugitives from justice accounted for 13 percent of denials<18>. In April 2009, the FBI announced it had completed its 100 millionth NICS approval since its inception 10 years before.<19>

we just have to get our state and other states to input data in a timely fashion.

so will this be an area where someone is laid off thus increasing the delay? It seems there will be more scrutiny now. Maybe DHS will fund it.

12. Serial killers - bundy, etc, were angry before, now, and later. Oh wait, guns were not used so much
with them (how many did Bundy/Manson/Gacy shoot) so their killings were not really relevant to the whole gun discussion. After all, guns, not people with problems, kill people - OH - and our Government and your tax dollars kill people through the wars we are in and the policies we keep supporting (and all those who will lose their life through climate changed because you and others use coal generated electric, drive cars, etc? Well - only guns harm others and they are an easy scapegoat).

Guns don't kill people - our lack of empathy, helping others, stopping wars, recycling, etc and so on do.

When you already have one, if not SEVERAL MORE guns already???

Just another class "A" demonstration of how silly much of this so called "Common Sense" legislation really is.
