Scott halts more than $400 million worth of road-building projects across state

Florida

Gov. Rick Scott, who was sworn into office last week promising to fix the state’s stalled economy, has halted dozens of road-building projects across the state, and potentially jeopardizing the jobs that go with them.

More than $400 million worth of projects were put on hold due to Scott’s sweeping executive order that suspended contracts for up to 90 days.

Within minutes of taking office, Scott put a freeze on new state rules and halted the signing of any new contracts.

The bid to freeze what he called "job-killing" rules has gotten most of the attention, but the move to suspend contracts until they could be reviewed by a new state office has affected dozens and dozens of projects across the state.

The move has halted Department of Transportation contracts intended to pay for everything from paving roads in rural counties to a $84 million project to add express lanes to Interstate 95 and a $94.2 million project for Flagler Memorial Bridge in Palm Beach County.

Meanwhile, the bid to freeze rules has caught up approximately 900 rules overall, although this week two rules were given the go-ahead by the governor's office. One of the rules allows the Department of Lottery to put in a new game, while another rule deals with the Florida Keys.

1. Now if he'd just replace those roads with rail, mass transit and bike paths...

13. Why do Floridians continue to support politicians that systematically
deprive them of any financial opportunities?

Now, if there is something illegal going on about bids... that would be something to look at. This looks like grandstanding on the backs of the working folk.

7. Is he trying to seize Federally allocated highway funds?
If so, this is going to be fun.

12. There may be some good to come out of this
Once the Doughnut King destroys the state government and sells off education, justice, and social services to his corp. fiends (sic); then maybe - just maybe - people will wake the %#$& up and finally understand how destructive and anti-people that Scott and his ilk (including Jeb - the idiot-lite) truly are.
The only reason he is where he is is because he out-spent Sink about 10 to 1 and still only won by 60K votes.
But...we have a tough road (and now, a poorly maintained one) ahead of us until that happens.

15. Well, on the bright side, Scott may destroy Florida so throroughly
like Dubya did with the country, that Florida's political dynamics may swing strongly left... thus allowing many more progressive candidates to be elected to office.

But there will clearly be some suffering.

16. If federal funds, they should be removed from the state. If state funded,
perhaps the Governor wishes to be the one who designates who gets the funds.
