Racially heated posting sparks UC Berkeley outrage
Racially heated posting sparks UC Berkeley outrage
Nanette Asimov, Chronicle Staff Writer
Saturday, September 24, 2011

BERKELEY -- A Facebook post announcing plans by a UC Berkeley Republican group to sell baked goods priced according to race, gender and ethnicity - "White/Caucasian" pastries for $2 and "Black/African American" pastries for 75 cents, for example - has drawn outrage on campus.

"I'm ashamed to know that I go to the same school with people who would say stuff like this," responded student Skyler Hogan-Van Sickle on Facebook. "I'm really trying to figure out how someone can be this hateful."

The campus Republicans, who expect to go forward with their "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" on Tuesday, say the event is meant to mock an effort by the student government to drum up support for SB185, a bill to let the University of California and the California State University consider ethnicity in student admissions. It's awaiting approval or veto by Gov. Jerry Brown.

"Our bake sale will be at the same time and location of a phone bank which will be making calls to urge Gov. Brown to sign the bill," posted six students who created the Facebook page. The purpose "is to offer another view to this policy of considering race in university admissions. The pricing structure of the baked goods is meant to be satirical."

1. Conservative campus groups have been doing this childish stunt for years
The best thing to do is ignore it and not give them the legitimacy and attention they are trying to get with this stunt.

Unfortunately, I suspect the rest of the students will make a big fuss about it as they take the bait and fall right into the trap.

2. They're doing what they've been doing for hundreds of years...
sowing racial divisions in order to diffuse class consciousness.

The way to respond to it is not to ignore it, but to make the teabagging types who would likely lap this stuff up realize that they have more in common with this guy:

than they do with these guys:

3. They live in a Fox News - Limbaugh echo chamber, even the young ones. No knowledge of history.
They are clueless. Utterly clueless. This group would make a great GOP debate audience.

I wonder if the African American cupcakes have little sugar nooses on them? Wouldn't surprise me in the least by now.

What is true is that women's cupcakes are discounted 25 cents across the board. Nice.

8. Inadvertently accurate reflection that women make 75 cents to men's dollar of income.

4. UC Berkeley has a zero tolerance policy against this stuff
I know. I work there and they release this information every year to everyone's email. Zero tolerance for hate speech or crimes.

6. Oppression! They should take their fundraiser off-campus. I suggest Oakland.
They'd get lots of foot traffic at say, the Coliseum BART station before a Raider game. ;)

16. It is hate speech. What do you call it?
It's racist and sexist. Hate speech comes in more forms than you'd like to think I guess.

way. I seem to remember them as very willing to get involved.
