Auctioning off in demand Vanity plates...nice way to raise revenue

ARLINGTON, Texas — Nods to Texas sports teams were among the big winners at an auction of personalized plates at Cowboys Stadium.
Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Tia Williams, holds the license plate "Go Horns" referencing the Texas Longhorns as auctioneer Matt Blevins calls for bids during an auction at Cowboys Stadium Thursday Jan. 13, 2010, in Arlington, Texas. A custom Texas license plate bearing the word FERRARI drew the biggest bid at $15,000. The Go Horns plate sold for $10,500.

But it was a license plate bearing the word FERRARI that brought in the biggest bid on Thursday night. The FERRARI plate drew a $15,000 bid at the auction in Arlington.

I like the idea. I don't know if other states do this but they should.
First it's almost a tax on the rich (no poor person will spend that much on a vanity plate).
Second, it's optional (no one is forcing people to give money to the state).

1. We could sell naming rights to the state legislatures!
Oh...I guess we kind of have that already.

2. I'll pay $1,000 if my plate is stamped out by Tom Delay himself.

5. Didn't work out the way it was supposed to here...

Democratic state treasurer candidate Steve Grossman this morning blasted his opponent, Republican state Representative Karyn Polito, after the Globe reported that she, her family, and her supporters had received more than two-thirds of the first 100 Red Sox charity license plate numbers.

"This is an abuse of power," Grossman said. "The people of this state know a sleazy practice when they see one."

Polito filed a bill in 2002 that allowed the Red Sox to issue the plate through the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The Jimmy Fund, which raises money for cancer research, was designated by the Sox to collect the surcharge on each registration.

When six plates were auctioned for charity in 2003, they drew huge sums: Ben Affleck paid $50,000 for the number 1 and Red Sox minority owner Phillip H. Morse bid $140,000 for Ted Williams's retired number 9.

Grossman said Polito, who herself has plate number 2, and her family should turn in all their plates.
