EMERSON, Neb. — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy pulled a rifle from a gun case under a bed and accidentally shot his mother at their home in Emerson in northeast Nebraska.

The Dixon County sheriff's office told KTCH radio in Wayne that the shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Sheriff Dean Chase says the boy was playing with the rifle when it went off. A bullet went through a wall and hit the boy's mother in her right side.

The 27-year-old woman was flown to Mercy Medical Center in nearby Sioux City where a nursing supervisor says she was in serious condition Thursday night.

Seriously, people. If you must own guns, KEEP THEM OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN! That mom probably locked up all of her prescriptions and cleaning bottles, had covers over the outlets, and other overboard safety requirements. But she kept a loaded rifle under the bed? WTF?
