Obama has always taken a positive tone.
I don't see why the Republicans are just now noticing Obama's uplifting, positive tone in his speech in Tucson.

He has always refused to personally attack other politicians. He has refused to say anything bad about other politicians.

This is very smart P.R. training. If you have noticed, Bill and Hillary Clinton have always refused to indulge in name-calling.

Al Franken and Kitty Kelley also do this in interviews. When attacked, they keep smiling but not taking the bait.

When the Republicans engage in dehumanizing and name-calling, it makes them look bad.

They have always been negative and nasty. See: Joseph McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Lee Atwater, etc. The Democrats try to appeal to the positive emotions. The Republicans feed fear, hatred, racism and sexism.

I guess Obama was so uplifting in this situation as comforter-in-chief, that the Republicans had to notice. Ezra Klein said that the Republicans had finally accepted Obama as President. They didn't accept the election results over two years ago, because Obama is one-half African, and have been raising hell for the last two years and three months.

The Republicans, all but the most radical, were finally forced to act with some decency in this situation.

"If the Republicans will stop lying about us, we will stop telling the truth about them."

--Adlai Stevenson, Democratic Presidential Candidate in 1952 and 1956.
