BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A Birmingham church is recalling the anniversary of a deadly Ku Klux Klan bombing by dedicating a marker at the spot of the blast.

Members of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church will gather for a memorial service on Thursday on the 48th anniversary of the attack, which killed four black girls getting ready for Sunday worship.

After the ceremony, the church will dedicate a stone tablet that marks the spot on an outside wall where the bomb went off on Sept. 15, 1963.

Three Klan members were convicted years later in the bombing, and one remains imprisoned.

The bomb went off at a time when civil rights demonstrators were trying to end legalized racial segregation in Birmingham's schools and other public areas.
