A transsexual has been murdered in Minneapolis.
Edited on Thu Jan-13-11 12:44 PM by MinneapolisMatt
Neighbor: Mpls. homicide victim worried about safety

The man found stabbed to death Tuesday in an apartment near downtown Minneapolis was identified Thursday as Christopher P. Bates, 45, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office. No arrests have been made.

-snip-

Police and the medical examiner said Bates was a man, but neighbors say the victim lived as a woman and went by "Krissy."

-snip-

Neighbor and friend Bryant DeVine said Bates was concerned about personal safety and offered to pay him for protection.

"She was very adamant about it," DeVine said. "Everytime I came into Krissy's presence she would bring it up."

-snip-

Police are asking that anyone with information call the TIPS Line at 612-692-8477.

How very sad.

5. Very sad and disturbing.
I was never too concerned about being a victim of violence in Minneapolis, but this hits close to home.

6. And of course they misgender her.
And wait until the fourth paragraph to mention her actual gender.

And then continue to refer to her as a man throughout the rest of the piece.

Stay classy, media. -_-

17. And the sad thing is they know better
there are professional journalistic guides on how to report on cases such as this, but they are either to lazy to read up on proper terms or don't care.

7. Words matter.
Especially to the LGBT community, we're living proof just how much words matter. Rhetoric and hate speech matter. Those in the LGBT community have been dehumanized over the years and so many think that killing us is aokay because we're "other" than the rest.

12. Transgender is an adjective/description. not a noun.
People are transgender. Someone is a transsexual. Just to clarify, FYI.

10. How awful.
I was terrified that she was going to be someone that I knew - I was terrified to open this thread.

While I didn't know her personally, I will mourn her. Rest in peace, Krissy.

14. My condolences to the community.
I remember all the violence in Chicago during my younger days, and it affects all.

As terrorism is want to do...

16. Thanks.
I hadn't been on FB nor did I have my phone with me when I saw this post so I was rather frightened. The sad thing is that while I was personally relieved, another family is in morning. I am so sick of all of this violence.
