Dad accused of tossing son overboard: 'We were having fun'
Edited on Wed Aug-31-11 01:15 PM by The Northerner
A father accused of throwing his 7-year-old son overboard during a cruise in Newport Harbor says he was just playing when he and the boy jumped in the water together.

Sloane Briles, 35, told KTLA-TV Channel 5 he did nothing wrong and "we were having fun, it was a harbor cruise!"

Briles says he did not hit his son on Sunday afternoon, although witnesses told police he did.

"I did nothing except jump in the water with my kid," Briles told the TV station.

Deputies who took Briles into custody on Sunday say he was combative and resisted arrest, and they believe he had been drinking.

When asked if he would have done it had he not been drinking, Briles said, "absolutely."

3. Violent drunks are often very good at this sort of spin...
...when called on their actions. "We were just horsing around and she tripped and the bruises are just from me grabbing her to break her fall". "I didn't throw that dart at his foot, it just happened to land that way and pin his foot to the floor". "Me? Angry? I never get angry!"

Yes, they are great at this. Hopefully the cops recognize this, it is SO common. They minimize what they did and they get their family members to go along, which doesn't give the cops any help in doing what needs to be done, sadly.

I hope they don't let this guy off the hook. Even if one believed his motivation was playful (I don't, and witnesses apparently don't either), it is gross carelessness that could have resulted in bodily harm or death to his son.

4. I'd go with the witnesses on this one - typical drunken behavior
and excuses.

7. According to witnesses in other articles...
He had struck his son enough, and caused enough of a scene with his girlfriend, that other passengers had already begun to intervene and berate him before he threw his son in the water.

His story is total bullshit.
