Gov. Christie is a previous hurricane victim
NBCPhiladelphia.com

N.J. Gov. Chris Christie said he can empathize, in a small way, with the victims of Hurricane Irene. Christie tells the story of how he and his wife lost all their belongings during Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

_____________

Nothing of high import, just an interesting little human interest angle.

1. Maybe that's why he was so strident in his effort to get people
to leave. I imagine experiencing one first hand affects you for the rest of your life.

2. Looking at him, you can be sure
he did not have to do much of the cleanup or re-building himself. I have a friend who just went through such a hell, and she lost so much weight I can barely recognize her.
And no - I don't think I'll watch the video I just can't stand him, but thanks for the post.

3. Well, even the people you most disagree with politically are human
I think it's something we forget as we (and I'm guilty of it, too) caricature our political opponents as heartless demons. Let's just say they're wrong, but let's never try to dehumanize them as people.

This guy, with whom I disagree wholly in the political realm, is saying he can understand the loss of many people in his state in a small way: although they lost everything (their stuff was in storage as they were moving and it was all destroyed), he at least didn't lose his home. It was an honest and sincere reflection on what it means to have your memories and the things that tether you to this life taken away.

4. My girlfriend lived in a house on the banks of the Ramapo River in Oakland, NJ.

She literally lost ALL of her belongings three different times in three different storms within seven years. House not just surrounded by water, but water more than halfway up the walls inside the house.
