A town in NY disappeared in floods from Irene

Upstate NY and Vermont hit really hard:

Prattsville in NY disappeared. Yup. Just floated away. Near my house in the Adirondacks, we have trees down, power lines down, rivers flooded, roads have collapsed and multiple bridges washed away. My friend is stranded at her home because both bridges on both ways out are gone. It is a huge mess.

Edited to add: NPR had a great story on On Point today, talked about why we are not talking about the real story here, the climate changes causing floods and droughts in other areas. Everyone should hear it if you can.

2. I would think not...nor would Adirondackers
who can't leave because of missing bridges and roads.

4. A number of bridges here in VT are gone
and don't forget the floods that went completely unnoticed (except for those of us who were affected): the floods of the night of May 25 / 26. Where I live, the May floods were far worse than last night. Irene was downright flimsy compared to the Biblical event we had back in May.

6. I think VT is worse than NY
Yesterday, the NY state thruway southbound was closed from Albany to Nyack - 137 miles!!! It was under 3 to 4 feet of water!! Parts are still closed right now.

8. the floods in May were bad, but these are worse and far, far more widespread
with much greater damage and at least 3 dead.

11. It depends on the locality
I was out walking around on the night of May 25/ 26 and it was truly as if the world were coming to an end -- I've never seen anything like it, before or since. As I said, WHERE I LIVE, Irene was just 15 hours of rain, no wind at all, no serious flooding.

13. sure, where you live but your comment about the May floods making Irene look like
nothing are just off base as OVERALL the damage from this storm far, far, far exceeds ANYTHING that happened in May.
