Triathlon Rahm Emanuel: ‘You can never say I’m an unfit mayor’
Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday described the Life Time Chicago Triathlon as a “great way to push off your mid-life crisis” after a 9th-place finish in his age group of 50-to-54-year-olds.

“You may say I may be unfit to be mayor. But you can never say I’m an unfit mayor,” Emanuel, 51, joked at an unrelated event.

Apparently referring to an ankle injury suffered when he landed funny on the sidewalk during rigorous training for the event, the mayor added, “Thank God my son ran with me on the last leg, since I haven’t run for four weeks.”

With a time of one-hour and 36 minutes, Emanuel finished 9th out of 80 for his age group of 50-to-54 year-olds in the Sprint, a shorter version of the Chicago Triathlon that includes a 820.21-yard swim, a 13.67-mile bike ride and a 3.11-mile run. He finished 334th overall out of 1,879 Sprint participants.

What ever you have to say about the man, this is a pretty impressive feat.

1. Unfit to hold office? Sure, I Can Say That
and will do so at a moment's notice, just for you, Rahm.

2. You know what was more impressive?
A month or so ago there was a shooting in an upscale area of downtown, around Wacker and Michigan. As per usual, it got a lot of media attention, while the deaths of two children who were random victims of gunshots on the South Side were pretty much ignored.

Emanuel paid a visit to the Englewood grandmother whose six-year-old granddaughter was killed while sleeping on her grandma's couch (another child, age 13, had been killed while playing basketball just days earlier), and told this to the press:

The mayor stressed that the high-profile shooting on State Street should be no more alarming than Gibson and Brown's deaths in Bronzeville and Englewood, where gun violence is more prevalent.

“I don’t tolerate gun violence or any type of violence anywhere in our city — whether that’s downtown in the business district or whether that’s an innocent child sleeping in her grandmother’s home,” Emanuel said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “I reject any value system that thinks that something happening downtown is more important than it happening in Englewood. That child in Englewood — while it’s the child of that mother and the child of that grandmother — that is a loss for the city of Chicago."

I never heard Daley say anything like that, in my recollection.

4. I think toward the end Daley was getting paranoid
he's "friends" with my uncle and was at my cousins graduation party, I tried talking to him but he seemed distracted like he was waiting for someone to pop out and kill him. This was about 8 months before the election. So although I can't remember him ever going to anyones house, I think he was afraid to go into public to begin with.

7. Thanks for posting that.
It's the kind of thing that gets lost in the politics.

16. Agreed. Whatever you may think of Rahm, he did good here.
And he's a huge improvement over Daley, who was an autocratic, elitist asshole of the highest caliber.
