Have you ever noticed how quickly DU is "googled"
I just clicked on the latest page, and I googled the subject line of the post at the top. "is rick perry dumb."

That DU post was the fifth hit. "1 minute ago."

1. Seems to be almost instantaneous
although where it shows might depend on how many sources there are as opposed to a single source of a news item. Its one of the reasons why when we were last allowed to change our id's I changed mine from a unique one to one which would constantly just throw this up : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXhm5euZytI :)

5. It was
edwardlindy. It gave me no grief until FR picked up on it when something I wrote here on DU which they misinterpreted to their advantage. Then I couldn't wait to get rid of it here. I do still use that for other things elsewhere. Its just a combination of my middle name and lindy hop abb'd.

8. Yes, Google watches DU continuously, so new OP's show
up almost immediately. It also ranks DU posts high for title text. By carefully writing OP titles, you can generate a very good response to almost any Post and attract readers. Think about how people will search when writing titles. SEO 101.

9. No, you can generate a *lot* of responses by being edgy..
That doesn't mean they are "good" responses by any means.

The posts that tend to get the most replies are those that are the most divisive.

17. By response I mean people coming to the thread from Google.
Nothing more. I'm not even sure what you're talking about.

13. This is very true and excellent advice.
There's another forum that I used to go to where both sides were jumbled into one forum and it got indexed very readily too. New members would come in all the time and say they found the topic by using a search engine.

14. I sometimes google things to find *my* DU thread is at the top!
It's probably because of all my spelling errors.

I've wondered if Google reads my cookies to find out what sites I visit regularly, and gives them a higher page-rank based on that. I don't know. I guess I could find out by deleting my cookies and rebooting and searching again. Maybe I'll do that one day when I'm bored. :)

16. It means there are many opportunities to bring thoughtful discussion to light
with a perspective that doesn't tend to have the loudest voice in other forms of media.

Of course that also means that there are just as many opportunities to bring rubbish to the global conversation.

18. I just think it's kind of interesting
Edited on Tue Aug-30-11 04:52 AM by Syrinx
I'm wondering just how much computing power, or just power in general, Google has. I'm wondering if Google really believes in their motto about not doing evil. I'm wondering if some sites are indexed more often than others. I'm wondering if it's wise to allow Google to achieve their stated goal of amassing all the world's information.

I never said you should care. I just thought it was interesting. If you disagree and don't find it interesting, that's okay with me also.
