Bullying drove Rebecca Black to enter homeschooling
Bullying drove Rebecca Black to enter homeschooling

Even celebrities aren’t exempt from school bullying. Such was the case with “Friday” songbird Rebecca Black, whose cheesy tune hit airwaves earlier this year and was quickly declared the “worst song ever” by many.

Speaking to ABC’s Nightline, the 14-year-old Los Angeles native said she faced so much teasing and harassment this past spring that her parents resorted to homeschooling.

“When I walk by they’ll start singing ‘Friday’ in a really nasally voice,” Black told the network. “Or, you know, they’ll be like, ‘Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?’”

Black’s mom Georgina Marquez, a teacher, agreed to take the teenager out of school because of the mean students. Additionally, Marquez didn’t want the taunting to distract Black from singing.

1. Rebecca Black wanted to be famous.
Her parents tried to buy her fame.

They bought her infamy.

Careful what you wish for, girl.

34. Every celebrity has their detractors.
It's part of being famous. Just Google the 10 billion Justin Beiber photoshops and jokes on the Internet. Nobody is immune to it.

Some kids can handle it. Some, like Demi Lovato and apparently Rebecca Black, can't. When a kid wants to try and become famous, it's a parents job to decide whether they're mature enough to handle a million people on the Internet making fun of everything from her voice to the size of her nose.

I don't know if it's even fair to call this bullying. This sounds like the natural repercussions of making an ass out of yourself.

“When I walk by they’ll start singing Friday in a really nasally voice,” Black told the network.

That's like Charles Manson complaining about his fellow inmates teasing him about having killed people!

Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 10:19 PM by rocktivity
But I doubt you'd feel sorry for Manson if he said that it was time for people to lighten up about it.

There's a good reason why Rebecca's schoolmates sing Friday "very nasally" -- because she does, too.

12. She should take after Wil Wheaton.
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 09:35 PM by backscatter712
The character Wesley Crusher from Star Trek: The Next Generation wasn't well received, for good reason - Wil himself said that the lines he was given were just gawd-awful.

But Wil took it in stride, and these days, he's a geek hero. He hangs out on Reddit, is a big gamer geek, goes to events like E3, and is generally well regarded by just about everyone.

Or maybe Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa, who are awesome, well-rounded individuals, who got no end of notoriety in the press solely because of their names. They turned into awesome people.

Hey, she's a young teenager, didn't really know better. Saying that Friday should fuck things up for her for the rest of her life is idiotic. For all we know, she could blow us all away with something utterly cool in the future.

19. My 10 year old grandson was telling me about his class mates who
are always using language to describe gays and girls. He listed at least 12 words and phrases they used all the time. The usual shit we hear all too often. Then he made me proud - he told me that he wants nothing to do with them and that he just has two friends left that do not talk like this. I told him the next time they spout off he should just say to them "you are so immature" and turn his back on them. I am not so sure that is good advice but it was the right advice. Knowing our community I doubt that these kid's parents even know they are talking like this. They are getting it passed on from other older kids. And the worst part is that we have excellent anti-bullying programs in our schools. I don't know what is with these kids today.

22. And yet Nickelback still makes music.
Ms. Black should just learn to turn and say, "might be a shit song, but it made me a nice bit of cash, morons" Hell, the band Rush made a decades long career out of that very mantra.

It was a cheesy song, but she's 14 years old. wtf do people expect?

I think she has a serious career ahead of her. People are just jealous idiots who would gladly be in her shoes right now. That's how it goes - if you're jealous of somebody, attack them and try to bring them down to your level. I'm an unintentional expert of this now, unfortunately :eyes:.

that song was awful. they should have known it was awful. and they should have known that sticking their 12 year old daughter in a crappy song for the whole world to see would lead to her getting savaged for years to come.

not to mention how many pervs watched their 12 year old daughter and got off on it.

blame falls totally on the parents. keep your kids off the internet!
