Batshit fundies suggest atheist registry, modeled after sex-offender registry.
From the "You know, the Nazis had pieces of flair they made the Jews wear" department:

http://pastorstahl.blogspot.com/2010/09/putting-atheists-on-national-registry.html

Brothers and Sisters , I have been seriously considering forming a ( Christian ) grassroots type of organization to be named "The Christian National Registry of Atheists" or something similar . I mean , think about it . There are already National Registrys for convicted sex offenders , ex-convicts , terrorist cells , hate groups like the KKK , skinheads , radical Islamists , etc..

This type of "National Registry" would merely be for information purposes . To inform the public of KNOWN ( i.e., self-admitted) atheists . For example , let's say you live in Colorado Springs , Colorado , you could simply scroll down ( from the I-Net site /Blog ) I would have , to the State of Colorado , and then when you see "Colorado Springs" , you will see the names of all the self-admitted atheist(s) who live there ( e.g., if an atheist's name happened to be "Phil Small" ) . The individual's physical address , and other known personal information would NOT be disclosed ( though , perhaps a photo could be ) .

Now , many (especially the atheists ) , may ask "Why do this , what's the purpose ?" Duhhh , Mr. Atheist , for the same purpose many States put the names and photos of convicted sex offenders and other ex-felons on the I-Net - to INFORM the public ! I mean , in the City of Miramar , Florida , where I live , the population is approx. 109,000 . My family and I would sure like to know how many of those 109,000 are ADMITTED atheists ! Perhaps we may actually know some . In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism . Or perhaps they are radical atheists , whose hearts are as hard as Pharaoh's , in that case , if they are business owners , we would encourage all our Christian friends , as well as the various churches and their congregations NOT to patronize them as we would only be "feeding" Satan .

Frankly , I don't see why anyone would oppose this idea - including the atheists themselves ( unless of course , they're actually ashamed of their atheist religion , and would prefer to stay in the 'closet.' ) .

I don't know what it is that makes them think we atheists eat babies or something. But putting us on a registry like child molesters? That's beyond fucked up. And I'll just say "Good luck with that." The only thing that will get me on such a list is a SWAT team pointing assault rifles at my head.

More here:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/08/28/1011322/-Christian-fanatics-want-national-registry-of-atheists-%7C-Update:-Even-Crazier-Stuff?detail=hide

including one particular tidbit from a Kossack commenter:

A lot of comparisons to what the Nazi's did to Jews in the comments. Those comparisons are accurate, but for a chilling contemporary analogy, entlord in the comments suggests the comparison to lists of abortion doctors that the religious right fanatics have passed around. This is the most apt comparison because this is the way the contemporary religious right operates. They make these lists as a means of harassment with the ultimate hope of encouraging their violent followers to take matters in their own hands. Make no mistake about it, this is not merely about discovering a chance to proselytize, and it's not merely about economic black-listing and extortion, this is about the dreams of more right wing violence.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be in my basement cleaning my guns...

generally have a Jesus fish on the back of their vehicle. It generally means - beware.

170. Same observation. Either those stupid fish, or a WWJD? logo
I live in a yuppified "new south" suburban hell populated by many nouveau riche, very full of themselves types. I try hard as hell not to let rude drivers get to me, but I snapped once after observing this one A-hole in an SUV seemingly attempting to make the maximum number of abrupt lane changes without signalling. He was being so rude to others it pissed me off. Had all the usual christian BS on it. I yelled at him at the next light: "what would Jesus do??" Then said "He'd use his goddamned turn signal and not cut people off!!!"

91. their vanity would keep most from doing so
remember that part of the reason they wear their religion on their sleeve is because it defines a part of their personality.

They use it to assert they're 'above' the rest of us heathens. As such, they would cry religious persecution, in my opinion.

Buddhists, Hindu, Wiccan, Muslim, and every other NON CHRISTIAN person in the United States. Buddhists don't believe in violence, however, even the Shaolin took up martial arts to protect themselves from muggers and thieves. It wouldn't be a good idea for any of these fundies to start messing with people from these other religious sects. They may not find us so easy...

Asahina Pass in Kamakura
his is one of Kamakura's seven Kiridoshi, or steep slopes, and is designated a national historic site. To make a passage connecting Kamakura to Mutsuura, construction of this road was commenced in 1241 under the command of Hojo Yasutoki, the Shikken officer who held the real power in the government. The name Asahina comes from the legend that a man named Asahina Saburo Yoshihide cut the road overnight.

In this print, the actor Bando Sanpachi i (d. 1770) as the warrior Asahina Saburo, brandishes a battle fan as he assumes the powerful fixed pose (mie) that marks a climactic point in a battle scene. The actor's crests appear in large circular motifs on his costume, which is decorated with auspicious Chinese symbols and a crane that signifies long life. This print by Kiyotsune, whose family specialized in actor designs, represents the actor in an aragoto role that displays the bold, masculine style that became a specialty of Edo actors. ASAHINA SABURŌ 朝比奈三郎, Strong warrior of the XIIth Century, son of TOMOE GOZEN. His prowess and feats of strength are often found illustrated in many Japanese paintings.

There is a Buddha figure caved in the cliff on your left side. Asaina Kiridoshi(朝夷奈切通し).
“Kiridoshi(切通し)”is a road that was cut through the hills. The central part of Kamakura is surrounded by hills on three sides. It’s a good natural fortress. This is one of the reasons “Minamoto no Yoritomo” chose this place to set up his government. On the other hand people in the town needed traveling and transportation of goods to and from the town. For that reason they cut through some places of hills. There are seven “Kiritoshi” in Kamakura. Here“Asahina Kiridoshi”was a main road to the“Kanazawa”region. It was cut in 1240. At that time, a hero named Asahina-Saburo-Yoshihede cut a ridge open overnight. So here has been called Asahina-Kiridoshi.
All Kiridoshi were constructed in strategically. The roads were narrow barely wide enough for a man on horseback to pass through in order to easy to defend from enemy attack.

My father did some research not too long ago. I am not too surprised at him finding this, as Japan is a fairly small place, island nation, with a well documented history. The tales of battles between warring clans were written down, the names of those involved, those who lived and those who died. There are even shrines to some of them. Those who were in service to the Shogun and the Emperor were rewarded with more than just rice and land, but recorded in history as well.

138. here is more..

The Asahina Kamon.

The Asahina of Suruga province were descended from Wada Yoshimori (1147-1213), whose 3rd son Yoshihide adopted the name Asahina. They entered the Sengoku Period as a chief Imagawa retainer family and were represented by two branches, one of which produced Asahina Yasutomo while the other was headed by Asahina Nobuoki. The Asahina became especially important after the Imagawa defeat at Okehazama in 1560, for afterwards Imagawa Ujizane came to rely on them to maintain order within his domain. Following the collapse of the Imagawa in 1569, the Asahina became vassals of the conquering Takeda. When the Takeda were in turn destroyed, surviving Asahina entered the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

These came from one of my ancestors.

71. That would appear to be a likely progression, I am vulnerable as a Buddhist that
also happens to be a Wiccan priest.

For some reason they really hate any beliefs along the lines of "an it harm none, do as thou will".

I do not think they have ever understood the teachings of Jesus. They have stolen his name and use it for hate.

Anyone that doesn't believe in Jesus, and a very narrow and specific interpretation of that would be considered atheists.
Liberal Christians would even be included.

22. Why don't they just make their own "safe list"?
As in, a list of evangelical Christians who don't need extra "witnessing" and whose businesses can be favored by like-minded fundamentalist freaks?

They could do that on their own through their oh-so-righteous mega-churches, without any help from atheists or people in local government.

Been my experience that the sign of the Jebus fish on a business means sub-par work and higher-than-average prices.

And nothing says "I will demand the most expensive stuff and never pay" than "You can trust me, I'm a preacher/pastor/deacon".

Every business owner I know demands payment in full and up front before dealing with a church, and the richer the members, the less likely they are to pay.

have some kind of test. What would they ask? Do you believe in a god or gods? Probably not. Do you believe in God? I might say yes Allah and that wont do. So how are they going to establish such a list. I am a non-believer but dont like the label atheist. Do I go on the list? Morans.

starts calling himself "pastor"

He puts up another webpage and calls it a "church"

He then blogs some of his ideas

One idea he has is to start a "national registry of atheists" so we can know where if people like Richard Dawkins live in our neighborhoods

Mr Dawkins actually lives in the UK, which is a different country than Florida, where the self-appointed pastor blogs and calls his blog a church

Your neighbours would be pissed at you over the constant line of people reaching from your front door to down the street and around the block.

but in this day and age, I'm coming to the conclusion, that the idea of Godwin's Law being used to shut down a discussion because it brings up Hitler or the Nazis is bullshit.

Sometimes, the comparison fits.

Look at what burgeoning repressive regimes do while they're trying to gain power. They make enemies-lists, and the Nazis were far from the first to do it - look at Madame Defarge's knitting from A Tale of Two Cities. I seriously doubt that Charles Dickens was the first to come up with this idea.

And you know, I feel i have so much more in common with many atheists then I do with other believers.

No one in my life ever opened up to me (now I understand why) and told me that they were an atheist, so I never understood just how much bullshit is shoved their way. Then I came to DU in 2004 and was given the opportunity to read many posts by atheists and got to hear about their individual experiences and it made me very sad. Part of the sadness was that I'm sure that i've had non believing friends who never felt "safe" enough to open up to me, to tell me all of who they were.

I hate this shit. Hate it.

aren't people these days against those types of things?

A registry that guaranteed all citizens national health care or the ability to vote without impediment, is somehow seen as a horrible idea, but when religious/non-religious people decide to line up on sides & identify themselves on paper..well ..something's squirrelly here to be sure..

Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 07:47 AM by Zephie
I don't doubt that those children would be treated as pariahs at schools by evangelical students or teachers. Some would lose friends, and I'm sure some kids grades would drop for imagined behavior issues that weren't there before.

I would wager that there would be a strong push by so-called "Christians" to remove those minor children from their atheistic parents' households as a way to "save" them. I imagine the charge would be child abuse or child endangerment.

I'm not strictly concerned for the atheists children either. I'm sure minority religions are included in their greater plans and by your avatar I'm sure you're in the same boat I would be in this case if you have kids. The children of Pagans are more often targeted than other religions for imaginary child endangerment charges. I know my husbands family would try to take my son from me if he ever died for religious reasons...

it would be first they came for the Atheists, then they came for the agnostics, then the pagans, the heathens, the Wiccans, the Buddhists, the Hindus, and so on. We are not close to anyone in either my husband's family or mine, so I'm probably ok with respect to my daughter, but I'm sure there is some group out there who would love to take her away from us because we are not Christian. Gods, but it is a frightening thought.

I (until about a year ago) worked in Pompano Beach, and it was not uncommon to be accosted at the Publix (in Palm Aire) by a Fundie. There were two Fundie Teabagger types (a mother & son team) that worked in my office. I hate to see anybody lose their jobs in this economy, but it was actually a blessing when the mom got the heave-ho (due to her nasty, negative attitude) and the son indignantly followed her out the door. I swear, you could actually FEEL the collective *sigh* as the entire office relaxed and the atomosphere became lighter.

is because knowing there are people who do not hold the same beliefs sheds doubt on those very beliefs. If there are some who don't buy the bullshit story, it may indeed be a bullshit story, and well, they just can't have that.

Edited to add, perhaps "scares" is the wrong word.

"Concerns" or "Bothers" may be more appropriate, but it really does boil down to fear. Fear they are wrong, and the tiny godless minority are correct.

And edited to add this;

Any thing or anyone that reminds them of the nagging thought in the back of their small minds that gOD doesn't actually exist is a threat to their pitifully small egos.

If gOD doesn't exist (which most intelligent beings know is highly likely), then it means that these peoples' pitiful and lowly lives are just that. No big mansion or virgins in the sky to alleviate their suffering on Earth. It's a big let down.

BTW - I just watched "The Invention of Lying" this weekend on Netflix that dealt (quite humourously) with this subject. Highly recommend it!

123. And how would people get on this list? Get off it?
I could have a lot of fun listing the entire memberships of some of our local evangelical churches in this directory *many churches publish member lists so their members can socialize and support each others businesses). If their members ever cracked open their Bibles and READ them, they'd realize that they aren't really Christians anyway.

If the system is easy to remove yourself from, any atheist can delete their own entry. If it's difficult to remove yourself from, it would be easy to so badly flood the database with garbage entries that the "registry" would be useless.

You can complain about it, or you can monkeywrench it. I've always been the more "proactive" type :)

126. The irony is atheists/agnostics know more about religion than the "faithful"
Atheists, agnostics most knowledgeable about religion, survey says

Report says nonbelievers know more, on average, about religion than most faithful. Jews and Mormons also score high on the U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey.

September 28, 2010|By Mitchell Landsberg, Los Angeles Times

If you want to know about God, you might want to talk to an atheist.

Heresy? Perhaps. But a survey that measured Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists and agnostics knew more, on average, than followers of most major faiths. In fact, the gaps in knowledge among some of the faithful may give new meaning to the term "blind faith."

What any other person believes is not fit for this cretin to know. Period.

Atheism is not a crime. Not believing in God is not a crime nor are there heresy laws in this country. Perhaps he needs to go read some European history of the mid 15th through 18th centuries between the Catholics and Protestants because his ignorance of it is stunning.

132. How about registering fundies and keeping them from any profession that requires sanity?
I mean these crazy delusional fools should not be allowed in any profession that influences children, or is responsible for health, safety, science, control of safety equipment etc. Certainly no ethical roles such as lawyer, judge, sheriff, police officer, Dr.

They should be limited to roles where their insanity would not put others in danger and might be suitable to their competency level, perhaps circus clown, comic relief buffoon on Jerry Springer, day laborer or perhaps cow manure cleaner.

All of their 'schooled at home' (ie brainwashed and made stupid) children should be required to pass annual tests on facts in the real world, which if they fail they must attend a real school because they obviously aren't getting an education.

Lest anyone mistake my sarcasm, these are just turn the table comments on these dangerous idiots.

This is EXACTLY why there is a separation of church and state in the constitution. In order to protect the rest of us from crazy people clinging to the last stone age.

176. I had a similar idea for a registry some time back.
I wanted to create a registry of global warming deniers. I'd keep their names, addresses, pictures, known associations, activities - anything relevant to tracking them - on a master registry accessible online. I'd have people submit candidate individuals for the registry who'd then be investigated before inclusion on the registry. These would be both prominent people (like scientists, elected officials, regulators, etc.) as well as regular citizens.

Then, when climate change increases to where the consequences are even more serious, obvious, widespread and immediate (due to the activism of the deniers and their elected government supporters) these people can be tracked down and prosecuted for crimes against the earth and humanity.

In fact, as a response to this atheist registry proposal, we should go out on blogs and propose our own special registries. Here's a few:

Climate change deniers.

Science skeptics and deniers.

Those who favor waterboarding or torture to advance the nation's "security".

Rabid, psychotic anti-gay orientation.

Please submit ideas for other registries as a reply to this message.

195. What Would be Better?
A registry of preachers, ministers, rabbis, reverends, whatevers, who advocate hate for anyone even the teensiest bit different than they are. I'm not advocating this, just sayin', that if we're making lists, let's do it right!

Also, this particular hate-monger seems a bit obscure, but other Florida hate-mongers have made the big-time by advocating burning Korans. Nothing worse than a hate-ridden attention whore!

197. Why would they bother?
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 04:43 PM by JDPriestly
In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism, Or perhaps they are radical atheists , whose hearts are as hard as Pharaoh's , in that case , if they are business owners , we would encourage all our Christian friends , as well as the various churches and their congregations NOT to patronize them as we would only be "feeding" Satan .

What a waste of time.

I don't happen to consider myself an atheist, but this sort of "witnessing" can be quite annoying, especially when the "witnesser" has the rational capacity of a monkey.

In case you become the target of one of these "witnessers" and you cannot politely excuse yourself from the forced indoctrination session, just start asking a lot of "interested" questions, like "What does God look like?" "Where is God right now?" "Will God be annoyed if I pray all day and don't do anything else?" Just keep on asking. Of course you ask follow up questions all the time. But what if you are wrong? But what if God really gets mad because I am praying too much? Does God really have a white beard? Etc.

Waste more of their time than they can waste of yours. You never know, you might both learn something -- and for sure the person you question with this Socratic method will.

I would like to add, that the average skeptic, and those of us who have worked hard to reach our own understanding of "God" have probably asked ourselves a lot more important questions and worked much harder at finding answers we can accept than the average "witnesser" who most likely is responding to fear, guilt and a lot of social gratification and pressure.

Now, mind you, there are lots of very sincere religious people who have also worked hard to understand their personal faith, but it is highly unlikely that they will want to join this movement that involves placing social pressure on people who happen to disagree with them or express their beliefs in language other than their own.

So, be prepared.

206. Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard
when being sworn in swore and oath, in other words she did not swear on the Bible - she is not religious.

Look around the world, from Great Britain, switzerland, Norway, Germany, France - the United States (Obama), Jesus and God moved out of the Church and Vatican a long, long time ago and straight into Westminster and Congress.

Disgusting.

212. Oh sign me up

When I get through schooling them on the Hebrew and Greek bible they never come back.

I moved next door and two weeks later the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons both visited.

The Mormon 'leader' kept looking on the cheat sheet for forbidden addresses and couldn't figure it out.

The JW 'leader' finally admitted "oh yeah we have talked with you before" and must have thought that they noted the wrong address.

Now the next time someone suggest that the Muslims do something about the Taliban you can tell them that you have a list that you would like to put their names on and they will get a visit from an American Taliban.

213. I miss the old days: Burning people at the stake. That worked, didn't it?
Evil will always have a safe house in the church.

Apologies to believers on here: I know there are truly respectful and sincere believers who would never condone anything like this. But know that you will always have among you those who would use religion (all religions) for evil, if allowed.

Forcing people to identify publicly as religious works just as well as forcing people to renounce their personal beliefs publicly.

America's purpose is to provide sanity and security for all of us, while allowing all of our diverse beliefs.

219. We are definitely discriminated against
especially in small rural bible belt areas. There are some non church people here but we are definitely the minority. My husband has got all the way to being told he had a job until they found out he didn't go to church. Of course they just called a few days later and said the boss had hired someone else (we found out later from their church) and a girl we ran into months later who worked there told us he didn't get job because when they asked what he did on the weekends he didn't mention church.

My so called christian neighbors and Fox lovers are some of the worst neighbors I have ever had. They have come over drunk to accuse us of things we haven't done, they screamed at us when mad at Obama (we didn't even start conversation) we see one of the husbands in about every local bar in town.

One of the neighbors had an affair and on and on....

I feel like even though I don't go to church I have better morals than they do. Not perfect but better....
