Just a post to tell everyone here - especially veterans - about the
great resort I just got to spend the weekend at. It is called Veterans on the Lake Resort and is located near Ely, Minnesota. Beautiful cabins - some handicap assessable and some not, beautiful clean lake and fishing lakes around it, boats for rent, walking trails, etc. We stayed in what they call the duplex cabin for two families (3 bdrm, 2 bath) with fully equipped kitchens. There are play grounds, a pool.

All of this was meant for veterans and their families but others are welcome if the cabins are open. Runs year round. I am so excited about it because much of it was financed through various veterans organizations. Just a great place to spend a quiet time with your family.

Unfortunately for me my family is never quiet! 5 little ones under 6.

3. What lake is this resort on? I usually go to the Marcell, MN area
on my fishing trips. I never been disapointed with the fishing there. August is not the best month for Walleye or Crappie, so did you catch some big Northerns?

lake (had fun boating) but they guys and a few girls went to other lakes and we took home 10 nice size walleyes. No crappies. Or maybe Northerns - I am not a fisherman.

8. I don't know what we paid for it as I went as a guest of my daughter
and her children. - Kind of a built-in babysitter. Pooled our money for rent, food etc. I was telling my children that the first time I came up fishing in Minnesota was when I was about 2 years old (about 1942) and my family and three other cousins families pooled their gas ration stamps and food rations stamps so they could go. We would have been arrested for the number of people we had in the two cars we took up there then. Not to mention one of the fathers was an alcoholic and wanted to stop at every liquor store along the road. To this day we laugh when we think of it.

But then those were the good old days when we had a lot of hope.

5. Ely?
I've heard that the mosquitoes are the size of sparrows up there.

;)

7. Actually there weren't that many mosquitoes this year. Had more
trouble with the deer flies.

10. We buy a vanilla skin lotion spray at Dollar General that repels deer flies
better than anything on the market.

12. Gah, I hate deer fies.
I was in Alexandria MN a few weeks ago and those pests ruined a perfectly good sunset.

9. Mosquitoes are not a problem this late into summer. Deer flies
now are always bad anytime when the weather is above freezing.

13. Yeah, I had never really experienced them like I did this year.
We don't get them down here much, but I had more than enough fun with them earlier this summer in MN. Yuck.

15. Hmmm, that is it but I never saw a sign saying anything about Fall
Lake. Interesting. Could Shagawa be the Native American name for Fall Lake? I did see signs saying that.
