Stoller: "Obama mocks the idea that he is an honest politician"
http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2011/08/matt-stoller-power-politics-%e2%80%93-what-eric-schneiderman-reveals-about-obama.html

Matt Stoller: Power Politics – What Eric Schneiderman Reveals About Obama
By Matt Stoller, a fellow at the Roosevelt Institute.

A lot of people have asked why New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is going after the banks as aggressively as he is. It’s almost unbelievable that one lone elected official, who happens to have powerful legal tools at his disposal, is doing something that no one with any serious degree of power has done. So what is the secret? What kind of machinations is he undertaking that no one else has been able to do?

I’ve known Schneiderman for a few years, back when he was a state Senator working to reform the Rockefeller drug laws. And my answer to this question is pretty simple. He wants to. That’s it. Eric Schneiderman is investigating the banks because he thinks it’s the right thing to do. So he’s doing it. This guy has thought about his politics. He wrote an article about how he sees politics in 2008 in the Nation, and in his inaugural speech as NY AG he talked about the need to restore faith in both public and private institutions. Free will still counts for something, apparently.

<edit>

I’m no genius, I just listened to what these people actually said and did. Obama mocks the idea that he is an honest politician, overtly, lying about NAFTA and FISA very early on in power. Miller lied to activists about being willing to put bankers in jail, and then said he was negotiating with banks in secret. It was overt. For Miller, as with Obama, few people really picked up on the lies until recently. Iowa activists who heckled Miller got it, as did Naked Capitalism readers. Now it’s becoming more and more obvious. That’s just how it is, I suppose, people in the establishment are paid to not notice corruption until the harsh glare is too bright.

<edit>

When you look closely at most significant areas of government, it becomes clear that the President and his administration are enormously powerful actors who get a lot done. Handing over our national wealth to the banks and to China is not nothing. These people are reorganizing the economy and the political system so that there are no constraints on the oligarchical interests that fund and pay them. That is their goal, it has been their goal from day one (or even before that), and anyone who says otherwise is just wrong or deluding him or herself. Obama spoke at the founding of Robert Rubin’s Hamilton Institute, and his first, and most important by far policy initiative, was his whipping for TARP, a policy that was signed by Bush but could not have passed without Obama getting his party in line. That was his goal, and he’s still pursuing it. The numerous “what happened to Obama” wailing editorials overlook the consistency of his policy agenda, which stretches back years at this point.

Credibility is earned. Stoller has earned it through his writing on financial and economic issues, as well as through his association with Grayson.

No offense, but you've done absolutely nothing to earn credibility in my book.

36. Don't you just love the numerous replies your simple post has inspired?
This seems to be a growing trend in GD. If someone goes against the grain even the tiniest bit, they are simply bombarded with some of the most asinine, pointless and embarrassingly stupid responses. I guess this is supposed to "shame" the poster into thinking what the group wants him to think.

SidDithers could write a book about this. He writes a simple "rec" or "unrec" and can get up to 15 utterly stupid responses. IMO, judging by the calibre of the folks piling on you, my guess is you're probably absolutely right to think the way that you do about the author.

6. Obama acts as if he doesn't understand why being known for telling the truth is a big deal
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 10:25 AM by Romulox
It's much more "pragmatic" to tell people whatever's convenient to get your way at the moment, he seems to suggest. The pain and distrust that arises from being lied to doesn't seem to register with him.

IMO, the President is borderline for being unable to empathize with others' emotions.

It's a national tragedy, perpetrated by lying politicians in our OWN party.

Time to take it back, and throw these creeps out.

Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 11:30 AM by WillyT
Faux liberals are seeing their grand experiment in tatters, though right now they can only admit to feeling disappointed because the recognition that they have been swindled is far too painful. And the recognition for many of the professionals is even more difficult, because they must recognize that they have helped swindle many others and acknowledge the debt they have incurred to their victims.

From the OP.

12. "Wall Street is our Main Street""
Kathryn Wylde, deputy chair of the New York Fed's board.

Wylde's day job is president and chief executive of the Partnership for New York City, a nonprofit that is funded by dues from its partner companies, which include the very banks involved in the talks to settle claims over hundreds of billions of dollars in soured home loans. Her apparent sympathy toward big banks compromises Wylde's ability to represent the public as a director of a bank regulator, said research analyst Christopher Whalen, who, along with analyst Barry Ritholtz, called for Wylde to resign.

"I'm just appalled," said Whalen, who is managing director of Institutional Risk Analytics. "She is a public director of a Federal Reserve Bank, and she's not supposed to behave this way. She is not an advocate for the industry."

"If she wants to be an advocate for the big banks," he continued, "then she ought to step down."

...

Wylde's compensation from the Partnership, whose partner companies include institutions that are regulated by the Fed, was more than $466,000 in 2009, according to a filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

If anyone had any doubts who Obama is really working for, the events of the past couple of weeks should have laid them to rest.

It will continue until we stop it.

26. The military industrial complex runs the world, as an evil dark queen,
whose arms have reached into almost every politicians' pockets and across wall street, banks and corporations; they are the ones who pull the purse strings; they instigate revolutions, terrorist attacks and ultimately start wars, all which guarantee their continued need by our so-called leaders. We are even led to believe they are good for creating employment.

The power they hold appears to be unstoppable...

22. The truth is painful.
In practice he's getting what he wants.

The continuation of Bush era budget and tax policy make the most sense if you replace the idea of a weak, outmaneuvered president with the idea Obama wants these policies intact despite his public rhetoric.

There is a very good reason many Democrats as well as Democrats in congress don't trust him to uphold traditional party values in closed door meetings with Republicans.
