If you are in the path of the hurricane and still online reading this....
* Stay away from the windows.

* Do NOT go outside. Trees are falling and it's not worth getting killed just to look around. If you have a large tree outside go the to opposite side of your house - huge trees that fall on houses can come thru the roof. And outside power lines that are underwater could electrocute you if you venture out.

* If where you are is HOT (and you don't have any ice) soak a thin towel in some water and drape it around your neck - it will cool you off. Be sure to drink lots of water or Gatorade so that you won't become dehydrated.

* Try to relax. Take deep breaths. You are in a stressful situation that is not under your control - tomorrow will be a new day and it will be better.

Here's a link for a Hurricane Tip List (and discussion comments) that might be helpful for the NEXT time the electric goes out:

p.s. Please know that many of our prayers from all across America are with the folks on the East Coast.

1. I blame Texas for this
Three weeks ago you guys prayed, along with Gov. Perry, to end the drought.

Connecticut got 1.7 inches of rain in the 36 hours following Prayeropoluza.

Then a week later we got another 1.3 inches of rain here in Connecticut.

And now we're getting a hurricane.

Lessons:

God has terrible aim.

"Ending the drought" is a very vague term. BE SPECIFIC NEXT TIME!

thank you.

;-)

3. Hey, Perry is an idiot.
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 04:29 AM by Tx4obama

I did NOT pray with Perry and the majority of people in Texas did NOT.
I was talking with my aunt in Illinois earlier this evening and she told me that she was hoping that the 'hurricane and rain' would have came to the Texas Gulf instead of the East Coast. I told her that I had been hoping that also!
I would actually welcome the hurricane here - just in order to get the RAIN! That is how bad the drought is here - one week of being without electricity in return of getting A LOT of rain would be much appreciated here at my house :)
I think that those of us that lived thru hurricane Ike are more prepared for the loss of electricity than the folks on the east coast and especially those folk in NYC!

7. Well, hell, I'll PM some of the hurricane over to you right now.

Look, the only people in the country praying for rain were all in Texas. So we'll just send you the bill for all the cleanup. Gov. Parry's brilliant accounting tricks will find money for it, right?

:P

11. DU sure could use a dose of humor, especially today.
After JeffR gave it up, someone else did it for a short while. But it's got to be a big job...

4. thanks for the helpful advice.
It won't be a hurricane by the time it reaches us, but the Gov has already declared a state of emergency for VT. Why? 6-12 inches of rain are forecast over the next 24 hours. That means certain flash flooding. Along with tropical storm winds, trees will almost certainly be blown over.

10. Something that I didn't know about until a couple of days ago ....

Dc/Ac Inverter

Do a search on Google.com or Amazon.com for ' Dc/Ac Inverter '

It is a niffy thing that plugs into your car that you can plug a power cord or an extension cord into and you can plug in your cell phone charger or plug in your laptop to charge up the battery or even plug in your coffee maker or a can opener, etc into to.

It is NOT at all expensive and can really come in handy if the electricity goes out when you do not have a generator!

12. You can charge your cell phone or laptop without the inverter.
If you have the right cord.

13. Yeah, but if you don't have a cell phone/laptop charger plug for your 'car'
and only have a 'regular' cell phone/laptop charger/plug that plugs into a wall socket - then the DcAc inverter is a great thing to have :)

p.s. And don't forget about the coffee pot ;)
