I don't like the fact of a nuke being disabled by a piece of siding. Somehow it doesn't seem like it ought to be that fragile.

3. Yep I just added it after seeing your tweet
And this one in particular don't surprise me that much... but I have been wondering about seismic effects more than anything

As long as it remains at that stage....

9. umm the *nuke* wasn't disabled
the siding took out a transformer so they took the plant offline until the transformer is fixed.

where tornado funnel seen -- don't know if anything go hit --

Here in NJ we have very heavy rain reports -- 4 and 5 inches - -but then some areas

like Morristown very little rain thus far???

We had a lull in the rain about an hour ago but coming down heavy now.

13. Yup, I saw that buoys off of Ocean City, MD were reporting 20+ foot waves.
Knowing the area, that's pretty shocking.

Tornadoes in Brooklyn! Wow.

11. Presume you're referring to the concerns about wind effect at North Anna?
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 02:59 AM by defendandprotect
Presume the dam is also OK -- ?

This is a Common Dreams post/comment which perhaps you've read?

what you are not hearing about North Anna on MSM:

from http://enenews.com/

WARNING: 130+ mph hurricane forecast to make landfall nearby NC nuke plant that’s only “built to withstand winds of 128 mph” — Could be a “once-in-50-year” event for Northeast (MAPS)

and

Dam at Virginia nuke plant inspected for damage after quake — Engineering experts had classified it as “high-hazard”

and

CBS Affiliate: Water level drop of 20+ inches in a day in lake used by reactors have many near quake-hit Virginia nuke plant concerned — Dam problem?

in particular potential problems with the dam are of great concern. the dam was built to provide a reservoir to cool the reactor. the dam was built to the same seismic standards of the day that the reactor was. However the seismic risk was upgraded at the site by the USGS leaving the reactor, and presumably the dam, significantly under designed for the site.

20 inches per day from a 9600 arce lake is 13 million cubic yards. thats alot of water. if the water dropps below the intakes. boom.

3:51 am --

Meanwhile, MSNBC was reporting perhaps a light sign of weakening of Irene --

but speeding up a little bit -- think it's been moving at about 16 mph?
