1. yup- I make it a point to use votive cups and tea lights
Also never fall asleep with them going, even if they are in a cup or leave them going in rooms you are not in, especially if you have children or pets who may knock them over.

2. Kerosene lamps are also bad. Be careful if you have kids and critters.

12. If you're careful, they're fine. I depend on Kerosene lamps in power outages
and when my kid was little I didn't have electricity so Kerosene lamps were our mode of lighting.

13. I've used them too, but they make me nervous. I live in a trailer which has a burn time of about
10 minutes, so I've shied away from them in favor of battery and wind-up lanterns. (It was different when I lived in a farmhouse. :hi:)

3. We get power outages frequently when we are having
events of nature like earthquakes or bad storms. Everyone keeps camping lanterns in the closet that are battery run for those occasions. Oh, keep the batteries separate until you are ready to use the lamps. They are much safer than candles or anything that has a flame like oil lamps and provide enough light to see your surroundings in the dark.

I guess New Yorkers don't go camping very much.

4. I have several of those here, the older Coleman battery operated ones. They

throw a really good light and are well made. They take 4 size "D" cells each, so easy to come by. I've had others in the past that take the regular lantern batteries, but those at least here are hard to come by when there's much of a demand for batteries.

7. I keep wind-up flashlights and radios...
and floating candles that I put in a 2 quart Pyrex measuring cup half filled with water. It makes a good candelabra.

11. I have "old fashioned" candle holders with glass that covers the entire
candle, a variation of (how ironic!) a hurricane lamp.

16. Don't mean to be snarky but anything glass covered
can be knocked over and break. Anything with flames are a no-no in events where things can be shaken and thrown around.

18. Not at all "snarky". Practical observation.
Once lit, I put it on a table and move away from it.

I don't really like to use them because of the cats. They've always been good, but it still makes me nervous.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I would've never guessed that flames can be dangerous.
