Alaska to appeal polar bear endangered ruling

27 August 2011

ANCHORAGE - The state of Alaska filed notice on Friday that it will appeal a federal judge’s ruling upholding the listing of polar bears as a threatened species.

The state, which maintains that US Endangered Species Act protections are not warranted for polar bears, sued in 2008 to overturn the Bush administration’s decision to list the animal as threatened.

That listing was based on what the US Department of Interior said was the rapid warming of the Arctic climate and the melting of summer and fall sea ice that it considered crucial to polar bears’ habitat. snip

The state and oil companies have argued that Endangered Species Act protections for polar bears diminish opportunities for Alaska energy development.

1. I love polar bears and donate to groups that fight for their survival.
I think they are such beautiful animals that I painted a mother and baby polar bear for my granddaughter. Now she wants a whole series of Artic animals...a white Arctic fox next. Maybe in the future she'll be an environmentalist...hopefully an activist.

2. Not surprising. I hope the judges do not take the sides of the oil companies
