A prison guard from a Texas prison in Bonham: 3 prisoners died of heat last week.
Edited on Sat Aug-27-11 08:30 PM by Th1onein
She was next to me at the bank, in Paris, TX. I was complaining about the heat. It was over 115 degrees here last week. These prisons are not air-conditioned. I don't see how they expect anyone to stay alive in this kind of heat without air-conditioning. Especially elderly prisoners.

1. if they die from neglect in prison, its a death penalty.
Pure and simple. Charge the warden with criminal negligence causing death.

2. Isn't that torture? These men weren't suppose to get a death sentence!
I wonder how many will perish in those prison tents in Arizona? Someone posted once that the temperature inside was 145 degrees. It's like slowly roasting to death!

9. This Texan says yes it would be
Many people have died due to the heat and I would swear I've heard a news report on each one of them. If 3 people died in a prison it would be reported.

See news article here: http://www.nbcdfw.com/weather/stories/DFW-Heat-Related-Deaths-Climbing-101366839.html

11. People die during extended periods of heat, and it us usually reported in the 'news', even
in Texas.

Often the deceased are elderly, but not always. Sometimes they are youthful, seemingly healthy, teenagers. They are generally reported in the local, sometimes national, 'news'. Including Texas.

6. She stood in the line next to mine at the Bank of America.
I knew she was a prison guard because she said something to the teller about working for the prison. I said something about how hot it was and she said, "Don't say you heard it from me, but we had three prisoners die last week from the heat." I asked her where she worked and she said that she worked at the prison in Bonham. She said it was really bad for the elderly prisoners there.

Like I said before, it was 115 degrees here a couple of weeks ago. Can you imagine being locked up in that kind of heat and not being able to escape it? It IS negligence, to let people die like that.

5. Republicans cheer this sort of thing
Isn't the cruel death of criminals something they celebrate?

Only a bleeding-heart liberal would care about someone in prison, right?

14. I write to a Death Row prisoner on a regular basis; they do NOT have AC
People in prison kill each other, stab each other, rape each other, etc. all the time. It's not newsworthy, or we'd read about it all the time.

13. Can't find anything on this via google. Went to the website listed in response
12, there's nothing on it there.

Is it possible the person in the bank line was not a guard, but one of the office workers who may have heard stuff 4th or 5th hand and embellished it? People do that, you know, from time to time.

16. Here's a website that has a story posted about this very topic.
Here's an excerpt from the wife of a prisoner in a Texas prison:

My husbands unit just came out of lock down, 3 wks ago stuck in his cell with the temperature rising stuck in his cell 24 hrs a day 110 to 120 having to put his mattress up on his little window to block off the sun and the guards would come by and tell him to take it down.

Senator John Whitmire (D) Houston told the Houston Chronicle that "enduring the heat is part of the reality of going to prison, there are a lot of inconveniences to serving time, there's no doubt it is hot" He said that he thought few Texans would be sympathetic to the prisoners suffering.

I wonder who's idea it was to phase out the old buildings and build new buildings with A/C at Guantanamo Bay? The statistics I am reading say that only 19 prisons out of 112 have A/C in Texas, does anyone know if these numbers are viable?

Heat related DEATHS have been regularly occurring in TDCJ prisons to prisoners NOT sentenced to death. Inside temperatures as high as 132-145 degrees have been measured inside, and Fire Marshalls have told prison officials at least one unit the buildings are too hot for humans...
