Mexican snobs beat, insult cop, raise debate

MEXICO CITY—An odd instance of police abuse in which two snobby women shoved, slapped and insulted a cop has captured Mexico's attention and sparked debate on police tactics, gender and class issues.
Almost a week after the incident, one of the women was detained Friday and charged with resisting officers, insulting authorities and discrimination.

Tapes of the late-night confrontation on Aug. 20 in the upscale Mexico City neighborhood of Polanco became a hit on social networking and video-sharing sites, exposing Mexicans' frustration with both the arrogant rich and ineffectual police. The press have given the aggressive pair the ironic nickname "The Ladies of Polanco."

Pulled over in a traffic stop, the two women shout, swear, shove and slap a policeman, who does nothing to resist. He tries to calm them, moves away several times and eventually allows them to drive away in their late-model SUV.

One of the women, a former Puebla state beauty queen identified as Maria Vanessa Polo Cajica, can be heard on the video waving her hand in front of the officer's face, insulting his mother and calling him a "crappy wage slave."

1. The feudal lords still exist

Just different people, in a different form.

Lazy little rich snobs looking down on someone working for a living. I guess this is how much respect labor gets, not just in America, but other 3rd world countries.

2. The rich in Mexico are as bad as anywhere else.
I found the best people I met there to be the middle class adults and the poor folks I had the pleasure of meeting. I met one rich, snotty girl whose dad was a Leftist politician in one state: she was such an awful person...and I wanted to like her because we had politics in common. Rich Tapatios are really the worst.

3. I remember being at an upscale bar in a tourist zone in Mexico.
I thought it was full spoiled American college kids giving the local Mexicans grief. After listening for a while and talking to a few of the louder ones, I figured out they were actually rich, spoiled white Mexicans, not Americans.

Funny how white Mexicans at their loudest and most loutish almost convinced me they were American college tourists.

4. I'm glad they got caught on tape. Mexico has a terrible distribution of wealth. Just as bad as the
USA's.

5. Not young enough to be called Juniors
but just as bad.

Problem is that this flows from the top... anecdotally one of my patients was drunk... DUI... and I refused to REMOVE that from the EMS report, which the DA had to acknowledge and send this Junior to see the judge. Dad WAS pissed... I mean how dare we? I pointed out that perhaps we were saving his life by doing that instead of cuddling him...

He threatened to get me fired... being a volunteer who is even better connected... has it's privileges.

7. One of these two ladies was a bank cop

for 62 days... no, not kidding. She left the force (one of the many in Mexico City) two years ago.

Now I find that curious... and makes the behavior enter something else. Competition beween the alphabet soups of Police forces is insane and Mexico City has at least five major police departments.

Oh and state of Mexico too....
