Five-year-old girl abducted from her bed and assaulted in Springfield, VA
Edited on Sat Aug-27-11 03:43 PM by Are_grits_groceries
A 5-year-old girl was abducted from her Springfield house while she was sleeping early Saturday morning and assaulted outside the home before she returned, police said.

Detectives determined that an unknown man broke into the house sometime after midnight, went upstairs and took the girl from her bed. The victim’s parents and 1-year-old sibling were in the home at the time of the abduction, according to Fairfax County police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt.

The girl was taken to a nearby location and assaulted, police said. She found her way back to her home after the assault and told her parents what happened, Gotthardt said.

She was then taken to an area hospital for injuries to her upper body, Gotthardt said. It is unclear at this point if she was sexually assaulted, he said.Police said they do not know whether the attack was random at this point.

Maybe Irene will blow the bastid away.
Got to be somebody who knows the family if he went straight to the bedroom. Wonder if it's a 'rent? I watch too much crime teevee.
I'm sure they are checking that carefully.

1. After the Elizabeth Smart abduction that got a lot of
publicity, I'm surprised that all parents of children don't take security precautions seriously to prevent intruders from getting into their homes to begin with, especially bedroom windows and other entries that could be easy to breach when a family is sleeping. I've been reading about children being abducted in their bedrooms while other family members slept since I was old enough to read a newspaper and that was sixty years ago, yet people don't seem to get how necessary it is to do security. There are a lot of sociopathic perverts out there.

2. It is summer time and if no central A/C, they might have had windows open...
It is a real dilemma in urban areas, especially... I'm always amazed to see open windows in garden level apartments or even up to the 2nd floor, where one could readily climb in. But, if one is hot, you just might take the chance.

3. I think there is electronic stuff like sensor equipment

that would send off alarms and shine lights on anyone trying to break and enter. I'm sure it's expensive but maybe worth the investment. If I had to live in an apartment, then I would probably opt for second or even a third floor apartment with less state of the art precautions, but precautions none-the-less if even low tech. Security is really a must if you have children in urban areas.
