Obama Vows to End Homelessness in Ten Years Time

This is an article from last year, but I thought it would be one of the highlights of Obama's presidency if implemented. Has anyone seen any updates on this initiative or has it been lost to the Tea Party congress?

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2010/06/22/96322/obama-administration-vows-to-end.html

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious plan that aspires to end homelessness among some of society's most vulnerable groups within the next decade.

"Opening Doors," a "Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness," calls for ending child and family homelessness in 10 years while wiping out chronic homelessness and homelessness among veterans in five years.

3. Exactly. A lot of our huge chronic homeless problem here in SoCal is
due to substance abusers who don't want to follow any stinkin' rules or laws, and find the street is the best place to live their lifestyle.

19. That sounds like a perfect plan.
Too bad our government would never do that. If a candidate came along and promised that, I'd be more than happy to get to vote for that candidate.

9. I would agree
we definitely, need to end the wars, which only cause more homelessness and misery here and abroad, and we also need to have a policy to work towards full employment. Certainly, there are those who are homeless and do not want help, but I think the article is referring to helping homecoming vets, at risk teens, and families who go homeless. Now until we have full employment, which in my opinion is not likely to happen any time soon in this country, I would be happy if these people could get at least some help.

8. Homelessness among children, families and veterans
That still leaves a whole lot of homeless folks.

Hard to imagine that this coporate bankster loving President who has largely served to undermine the interests of labor and the poor will actually make much progress in addressing this issue. I suppose he could mandate that these folks pay for housing and then provide them with inadequate subsidies to do so.

But of course this weill never get that far. Politics are such that the issue will not be addressed before the next Presidential election. The idea may be bandied about on the primary campaign trail in an effort to attract disaffected progressives. But nothing happens if he is defeated in the general election. And he has been known to make representations on the campaign trail that he utterly fails to act on or fight for while in office.

I ain't holding my breath waiting for this to happen anytime soon.

13. He was obviously misquoted.
He meant to say "end homelessness for corporate executives by giving them more tax breaks so they can have multimillion dollar houses".

16. There has been a huge upsurge in homeless here the last few years
A lot of the 'will work for food' sign wavers now look like ordinary people. Several years ago they were all either drug addicts or people with emotional/mental problems. Same with the homeless in general. A lot of non addicted, non mentally ill, well kept looking homeless the last few years. Folks who lost their jobs then ran out their unemployment I presume.

20. I'm not the first to say this...
... our system would not work without the very important role the homeless play; they are there to scare the living shit out of people, making them willing to continue working their nowhere jobs while feigning a good attitude and not thinking too much or asking too many questions.

Homelessness ain't goin' nowhere in this country, but the people for whom it's dangerously close are. That's just how we roll.

26. "JACKSON TO URGE...MAYORS TO ADOPT BUSH ADMIN STRATEGY TO END...HOMELESSNESS IN TEN YEARS"
Edited on Sat Aug-27-11 01:04 PM by indurancevile
http://archives.hud.gov/news/2003/pr03-068.cfm

DENVER - Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Alphonso Jackson is urging the nation's mayors to adopt a resolution that mirrors the Bush Administration's strategy to end chronic homelessness in 10 years. At its annual meeting in Denver, the U.S. Conference of Mayors will consider adopting a resolution to join the federal government's response to homelessness by providing permanent housing and services to persons experiencing long-term homelessness.

In January, the Bush Administration challenged 100 mayors to create their own 10-year plans to end homelessness. To date, Chicago, Memphis, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Atlanta are among more than a dozen communities that have already endorsed the Bush plan and adopted similar 10-year strategies of their own.

29. a very lofty goal
however without more living wage type jobs available, I can't see that happening. We really need a government jobs type program like there was after WWII. I know that would throw the cruel conservatives (I like this new term) into fits but it would work. They could build that housing for the homeless, repair and build infrastructure and even start some manufacturing back up. Sigh... I like this dream.

32. How oxymoronic: maybe the homeless can move into the pads of those who die needlessly
by reason of the RW-inspired grand bargain which opens the doors to plundering social security and Medicare. :patriot:
