Fill up tanks, get some cash
Edited on Sat Aug-27-11 02:03 AM by SoCalDem
Every helpful "stormie" reminds people to do those two things.

Has anyone else noticed that for poor people, we are once again at the end of the month , when most are flat broke?

and for the millions of people who no longer have jobs or paychecks coming in, "getting some cash" may be impossible.

With a storm so large (but considerably weaker), and one that's expected to hit a large area, it may not be as dire as when Katrina hit NOLA, but if you are poor and have no money, you almost have to ride it out:(

In the 'richest, most envied country in the world' no one facing a natural disaster should have to ride it out. Ever!

3. I've been thinking about this, too.
This is very real for lots of people: the poor, the disabled, seniors, veterans. There are a lot of people who won't be able to even stock up on food, let alone have the money to go somewhere and maybe rent a motel room, because the end of the month is always a tough time financially. :(

4. A lot of the people who stayed in New Orleans
Edited on Sat Aug-27-11 02:46 AM by LuvNewcastle
during Katrina were vilified because they stayed, but if the storm had come in on Sept. 4th instead of Aug. 29th, a lot of more would have left. A big reason for the looting was that the people who stayed were already low on food and they couldn't afford to buy any more before the storm. But I'm sure that if they had missed the payments on their brand-new Cadillacs for that month, they would've had enough left over for food.:sarcasm:

Another big reason why people stay during a storm is to take care of pets. Most shelters don't allow people to bring their pets and you can't take your pets with you on most transportation systems. There need to be more places where people can bring their pets with them or take them to be cared for during a storm.
