Strong earthquake hits northern Peru near Brazil
The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a strong, but deep, earthquake in a northern Peruvian jungle region near Brazil.

There are no immediate reports of damage or injury in the quake, which was felt mildly in the capital of Lima.

The Colorado-based USGS says the quake was centered just north of the jungle city of Pucallpa and struck at 12:46 p.m. local time (1:46 p.m. EDT). The quake occurred 90 miles (145 kilometers) underground. The deeper the quake, the less it is likely to be felt or to cause destruction.

2. It was very deep-- 145 km deep. That matters as much as the magnitude.

The Virginia quake was very shallow, just 6 km deep.

Update: Peru's Institute of Geophysics registered the quake's magnitude at 7, but an official at the institute said that because of its depth, it only felt like a 5-magnitude quake to Pucallpa's residents. The official was not allowed to be identified by name.

3. some phone lines down
Due to its depth it was felt on a very wild scale.
The epicenter was close to the Brazilian border.
Telephone lines were down in the area.
We have no information about damage or injuries at this time.
We will start an article as soon as we have some news from the area.
