Be prepared for after shocks...
Edited on Tue Aug-23-11 07:00 PM by AsahinaKimi
After a Quake, as most people who have been in them will tell you, aftershocks almost always follow. After March 11th, aftershocks are continuing to happen in Japan. People in Los Angeles for the North Ridge quake stayed outside for days, after that quake. In San Francisco, in 1989 there were after shocks for months.

Most of them will be smaller then the original event, but they will happen none the less. Also because its happened, don't think it won't happen again down the road. If you look at the USGS maps of California and Nevada (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/) you will see that every day there are micro shifts.

I am pretty sure that for the next couple of days you may continue to feel tremors, though hopefully
minor.

4. After shocks ususally come after a major event..
I would imagine if the Republicans pulled a Major Event, something negative, there would be after shocks.. enough so people would stand up about it and let them know, just what asses they are!

7. indeed,
beyond the obvious earthquake, I was searching for what you might have considered an event significant enough to inspire your comment.

Gaddafi's apparent fall?

The debt ceiling debacle?

????
or a pure and simple comment on the earthquake with no double meaning intended?

10. If you have any pets
Stay with them, hug and pet them a lot. They will eventually calm down. I always thought it was interesting to note my cat's behavior to an up and coming after shock. He was usually acting strange just before it hit..like hiding under a table or a place he normally wouldn't just go.

3. Yeah, right?

In 1989 after the San Francisco Quake, we had after shocks for weeks! They can really get on your nerves, especially when you are in bed, and your bed starts to do that rolling back and forth, up and down motion. You would think you are on a ship.. stuff begins to rattle, and you can hear the entire foundation of the house make crackling, poping noises. Pets get freaked out too!

6. Pets need a lot of attention
after a quake. They sense it coming before we do.. I always do a lot of cuddling and petting so my kitty knows its okay!

I hope none of the aftershocks are as strong as the first one, for his sake. He was really scared earlier. He's been right beside me anywhere in the house that I go all day. He is just now starting to settle back down and take one of his millions of cat naps a day. He was scared. :(

12. As a former resident of Northridge (all one word, by the way) I can tell you that
aftershocks become VERY nerve wracking after a while. I was also in the 6.6 1971 Sylmar quake ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_San_Fernando_earthquake ) and I saw a lot of people literally become nervous wreaks from the aftershocks. (And no, I did NOT bring the earthquake with me when I came to D.C. last week)

13. Oh thanks!
My friend lives down in West Hills, California in the Valley and was terrified by the Northridge quake. (Thanks for the spelling, my spellchecker is hating on some city names here.) She told me how she actually saw a tsunami in her swimming pool! The water reared up and washed over the back yard!

14. In the aftershocks of the Sylmar quake
I saw "waves" in the street. The ground actually swelled up with moving waves, just like the waves in water. It was the strangest thing I ever saw.

17. I have not felt any aftershocks although I heard there were some minor ones.
The "big one" yesterday still has people on edge here. Many buildings remain closed for inspection. I think my office building is open though... so I gotta go.
