I had no idea we were even subject to it here on Long Island.. Should I worry about the ocean?

5. Stay alert. Could be a bigger quake coming. This may have been a pre-cursor.

19. Thats what I'm afraid of.
For this to be felt as far away has it has, tells me the ground isn't all that stable, *and* it was apparently only 4 miles deep.

They are reporting Detroit to Boston to Atlanta.

3. no you don't need to worry about a tsunami
they occur from 1) earthquakes under the water or 2) earthquakes which cause huge landslides into the water

8. An earthquake is Natures way of reminding us that we really aren't in charge.

And, having been through the 6.7 Northridge quake, I can attest to it being a forceful argument.

9. There was a 4.1 in Canada in 1989
and everything in Boston swayed for a good 30 seconds. My cat looked like she'd had a few too many as she tried to walk into the room and my hanging plants were flying around in circles. I was working graveyard that night and all the patients were too freaked out to sleep.

East coast geology is weird and quakes can be felt many hundreds of miles away.

12. No, the epicenter is inland
but you are also on ancient bedrock so believe it or not they are worst than in the West Coast, and you have no quakes there so...

You might want to make sure to keep your eye on water mains... and until that is ensured that they are not damaged you might want to consider bottled water.

14. It is upsetting.
I've never been through a 5.8 magnitude, but I have felt smaller quakes, a couple that were overnight and woke me up. Very unsettling.

16. Actually I have lived in Chile and
California most of my life and have been through many earthquakes both small and large and I'm still here at the age of 70. It looks like you east coasters are going to have to start looking at your building codes or there could be unnecessary tragedy from collapsing buildings and structures. If you get after shocks head for doorways or get under something solid as those will be the last to collapse. Get away from windows because shattering glass can be dangerous. Also falling furniture and furnishings can be dangerous. Good luck.

As scary as earthquakes are, they aren't as dangerous to my way of thinking as tornadoes and hurricanes. Those really scare me.
