Undocumented immigrants face checks on Amtrak, Greyhound

Federal agents appear to have stepped up checks for undocumented immigrants on public transportation, including Greyhound buses and Amtrak. The feds say they have the authority to check any public area.

As a Greyhound bus prepared to leave a small town near Atlanta, 19-year-old Azucena headed to the window seat on the last row , on her way to Miami to start school and a new life.

She propped a pillow against the glass and drifted off to sleep as the bus glided down the highway toward South Florida.

Around 5 a.m., Azucena, who does not want her last name used, woke up when the bus driver pulled up to the Pompano Beach bus station—one stop before her final destination.

Three U.S. Border Patrol agents boarded, announcing they would be checking IDs. She lifted her head to see one agent walking directly toward her.

5. Why should it be a problem if they are not illegal aliens, but rather immigrants

who are here legally by going through the immigration process (hense the term immigrants)?

They are not here legally, but they have children and grandchildren who are. They are basically prisoners on the island now.

Agree in principle or not, it's a tragic situation for many people who have existed quietly in the shadows. These are the people who clean the toilets and wash the dishes, live in small apartments where they sleep in shifts because there are 12 people living there and never cause any problems. They used to be able to at least go to the mainland to get some cheaper groceries.

This hateful abuse of people is wearing thin on me. We are the United States of America damn it.

I don't routinely travel in the country with my passport and other papers. I suppose as a white blue-eyed man (blond hair having gone mostly grey), I'm not entitled to attention from La Migra, but this program raises many questions of due process and selective enforcement.
