Dear Rep. Barbara Lee, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Can We Talk?

As a constituent who resides in your district, I just want to weigh in on the hatred and political divisiveness that I hear and read about on the news and on the Internet. There are forces working very hard at making sure that President Obama is defeated in 2012. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they took an oath or signed a pledge to that effect.

The newest political strategy is to turn the African-American community against the first black president. The idea is to get black folks to scream at the President and to threaten to withhold our support come November 2012. Due to the very high unemployment rate in the black community, this could be an easy sell. The well-paid professional propagandists don’t ask African-Americans to lay the blame for the lack of employment at the feet of the business world (which is hoarding up a couple of trillions in their rainy-day fund), or to consider the fact that governors everywhere are cutting down on the public sector workforce (comprised of large numbers of black Americans per capita), or to holler at the Republican-dominated House, which has blocked most of the job-creating programs introduced by Democrats. Instead, they want us to aim our fire solely at our President and to blame him for 30 years of white men’s policies.

Now, I have already informed myself on what this President has done to help the American populat

1. Who are you blaming here, the "black folks" or the propagandists?
And who are the "professional propagandists"?

Is the only reason that "black folks" might criticize Obama is because they have been influenced by "propagandists"?

Might any "black folks" be critical because they are upset that Obama hadn't done more for them?

Are "black folks" not allowed to criticize Obama?

2. One question I need an answer to is: Democrats had a
majority in the House and Senate for two years, and we got the same "nothing" we are getting now. So why should I support someone who, as far as I can tell, does not support me? I will be honest with you when I say that because I am in my 50's the future is looking pretty bleak at the moment. I am most outraged though when I think of the lack of a decent future for my children and grandchildren due to the selfish and obnoxious way the rich need to get richer at our expense.

7. Consider that the Senate Dems had a filabuster proof majority
Edited on Fri Aug-19-11 07:07 AM by JoePhilly
for a few months, not 2 years.

Al Franken's election was contested and as a result he was not seated until the summer of 2009. That gave us 60 votes in the Senate (and that's if you count Lieberman and the other 5 or so blue dogs).

And then Ted Kennedy died at the end of August 2009.

So in reality, the Dems had a filabuster proof majority for all of about 60 days. That's it, 60 days.

And as has become obvious, the GOP has used its ability to filabuster pretty much everything in the senate for the remainder of those two years. And their victory in the House cements their ability to block all legislation. This is why the GOP House has passed nothing but nonsense legislation since Jan 2010.

The reason the GOP is blocking everything is so that the economic condition of the country remains stagnant, ensuring that Republicans, and sadly some Liberals, will blame Obama ... creating an opportunity for a Republican President to return in 2012.

That's what's going on.

8. A website full of all the nastiest, most hateful ideas that ever fouled the air in GD/P?
All left-bashing, all the time? I reeeeeeally don't think so.

There's a reason that most of the people who post at that site have been tombstoned here. Let disruptors rest in peace.

12. The letter is well sourced, and appears to be going viral!
Joe Madison read it on his radio show this morning.

It's an article that people should read in full,
although it is true that some people don't read,
and are as closed minded as the teabaggers they claim
to distain.

Thanks for posting! :hi:

15. most people forget
that the President can only enact the laws that come across his desk. To make it there it must pass two congressional bodies to have a signature. He was black-balled from day one by republicans mainly Mitch McConnell (r) Kentucky, who released a letter basically stating any legislation proposed by This President and the Democratic congress should be blocked. And it is their job to see him FAIL. And they have showed they will take the country with them. No matter what. You had Blue dogs who just could not side with the people only with their corporate interest. Because if we had both the congressional bodies and the Presidency the Democratic party should have acted like it. There was no unity. Or in my opinion no loyalty. So there are some who can be angry, but if the shoe fit maybe someone should kick themselves with it. Just because a person is a member of the Democratic party doesn't mean they can't be bold in nature. Meaning they don't necessarily line up with all of the tenements of the Democratic party. No unity. To get angry with a President who needs our support when he can't get it anywhere else is fucked up. And they are trying to divide up the African American vote with all this dumb rhetoric.Who needs health care more than the 97%? Who need low-income housing more than the 97%? Who need protection from predatory lenders and usury card rates more than the 97%? Who needs a Government that works for the people, environment, and social safety nets more than the 97%? The dumbest shit I ever seen was voting for someone who says they want limited Government or Government out of the lives of American citizens. So if they can divide African Americans with this type of rhetoric they were not with us any way.Ask Allen West the Republican Valet.
