(More Isolated Behavior By Right Wingers this time in Korea)
Conservative and far-right groups are engaging in increasingly bolder and more frequent acts of abuse, with a leading opposition party presidential candidate recently subjected to abusive language and physical violence in broad daylight.
A woman in her 50s affiliated with the group Right Korea attacked Democratic Party (DP) Lawmaker Chung Dong-young on Aug. 16. She called Chung a “North Korean puppet,” “commie,” and “Kim Dae-jung toadie,” grabbed him by the hair and shook him.

On the evening of Aug. 12, Gang Jae-cheon, a self-professed “asphalt right-winger,” stormed into the site of a tent protest by descendants of independence activists and members of anti-Japanese and April 19 groups in front of the KBS building in Seoul’s Yeouido neighborhood. Gang was taken away by police after causing a disturbance at the scene, slashing the tent a number of times with a utility knife. The individuals in question were demonstrating against the airing of a television documentary they alleged glorified former President Rhee Syngman.

Gang, who ordinarily posts dozens of Twitter messages each day calling for the “purging of leftist North Korean puppets,” defended his actions with a Twitter message Thursday reading, “There is a lot of talk from the right about me waving a wooden sword and cutting up a tent with a utility knife. In short, gutless people are gathering to do only the safe and comfortable things. If are willing to do things like me, I will applaud you.”
