GOP Rep Virginia Foxx: Loughner's Beliefs 'The Liberal Of Liberals'
Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) says political rhetoric doesn't really incite violent behavior at all -- but not before describing Arizona shooting suspect Jared Loughner as a "communist" and "the liberal of liberals."

"This guy appears to be a communist," Foxx told the Winston-Salem Journal. "His beliefs are the liberal of the liberals . There is no evidence whatsoever that this man was influenced by Sarah Palin or anybody in the Republican Party. This man is not a conservative; he's a fan of communism - that's the opposite of conservatism."

In ascribing affirmative political views to Loughner, Foxx is going farther than her colleagues. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), by contrast, only claimed Loughner doesn't appear to be a Tea Party member.

"I don't think members of Congress incite that kind of rhetoric," Foxx added. "I don't think the things we say incite that kind of behavior. And I don't know that the things other people say incite it. I just think we have deranged individuals in this country and occasionally they do bad things."

28. I voted against her.
Edited on Tue Jan-11-11 07:15 PM by appal_jack
I live in the 5th Congressional District of NC (currently represented by Virginia Foxx, alas). Please don't paint us with too broad a brush. Foxx routinely loses my county, but makes up for it in neighboring counties' votes.

Foxx's opponent this last election, Billy Kennedy, was an excellent candidate, but perhaps one who was too nice and gentlemanly to successfully unseat her. I donated a small amount to his campaign.

I am truly embarrassed and enraged by Foxx's comments today. I will again donate to her opponent in 2012.

On Edit - All DU'ers should counter the ridiculous arguments of Foxx & the rest of the extreme-right by noting that Loughner also identified the works of Ayn Rand as favorites, not to mention Mein Kampf . Hardly leftist source material.

5. Idiots. It has zero to do with ideology....
We have deranged people looking for their 15 minutes, and to be a big man in the eyes of someone else. A liberal wouldn't choose a Democrat, Blue Dog or otherwise.

20. Please clarify --
If it has nothing to do with ideology, why would a liberal not choose a Democrat?

It does appear that the alleged gunman chose Giffords as one of his targets. If his choice had nothing to do with ideology, why did he choose her? Or rather, if ideology has nothing to do with it, then couldn't he be a liberal and still choose a Democrat, a progressive, a socialist even?

26. It could have been in reverse...
It could have been a liberal group pushing for emotions being whipped to a froth... it's the froth he's after, not the ideology. He is clearly not in his right mind. He's a loner. He's looking for acceptance. He's heard the rhetoric aimed at this woman, and he followed through. He smiled in his mugshot... he thinks he's a hero. Sane people don't do the follow through bit.

If it were a purely ideological situation with a liberal holding a gun and planning on using it, he'd draw a bead on a Republican.

27. It's not about froth -- it's about paranoia
Loughner may or may not be technically a paranoid schizophrenic -- but he was definitely responding to paranoid fantasies wherever he could find them.

The left doesn't feed those kinds of paranoid fantasies. To the extent that we're paranoid at all, it's pretty simple, mundane stuff -- like that the FBI is spying on anti-war activists. You have to go to the right for the kind of grandiose, over-arching conspiracy theories that someone like Loughner craves.

That's what I think the problem really is with Beck or Palin. It's not that they're inciting violence. It's that they're promoting a certain brand of paranoia that provides the energy and the validation for the truly deranged.

death and the wounding of so many innocent people!). . .the fact that the RIGHT just doesn't get it. . or that they are hypocritical enough to deny any responsibility for this.

Yes, the extreme Left is not totally innocent. . .but by far, the Right has been using the most inflammatory, violent comments and imagery!

No one denies that this man was insane. . .but obviously, not insane enough not to get clues from his environment!

And. . .it is a shame that political leaders are no more aware of what a Liberal, Conservative, and Libertarian is!

To me. . .a few "visits" to infowar and blog exchanges with a few Infowar addicts tells me that he was an Infowar fanatic. . .
-New World order
-Fear of gun control
-Fear of his "rights" being taken away
-Beliefs in "world currency" and conspiracy to control our minds
-hatred of the government "interference," including in educational settings
-intense focus on "the Constitution"

I would say he has at the very least drawn a lot of his paranoia from Alex Jones and his "Prison Planet!"

moderate for my tastes. She used to be a Republican. She's a centrist, blue dog.

She's pro-choice. That's why Foxx considers her so ultra-left.

33. Pro-choice is the most likely reason she was targeted, IMO.
If she were a pro-choice republican she probably would have still been targeted.

As a father of a schizophrenic son said yesterday on Democracy Now, the violent rhetoric is like gasoline to the flame to a mind incapable of orderly analysis -- which is of course why the far right engage in it.

That they got a sick mind to act on their vitriol is exactly why they do it.

30. What about Loughner's obsession with the gold standard?
What the Ayn Rand novel which he lists as one of his favorite books? Neither of those are things which would suggest that Loughner is a "communist" or "the liberal of liberals."

Also, how the hell is one simultaneously "the liberal of liberals" and a communist? Communism and liberalism are not the same thing; they are two totally different and incompatible ideologies. The fact that a member of Congress does not understand this simple fact is just frightening...
