Let me tell you about this little shit that showed up at my door...
It was a young guy late teens early 20's. He was selling magazine subscriptions, trying to win a trip to Italy. So I stood and listened to his whole spiel, he talked really fast, sounded like he had a mouth full of shit, but I listened. He handed me the pamphlet so I could see the different magazines--which I probably would have ordered from--while I was looking he asked what my interests were. I told him politics and football.

He was surprised anyone would be interested in politics given our current situation--I said all them more reason to stay informed. His next comment was "I hope your for the right team, you're not an Obama fan are you"? I looked at him and said yes I am, I'm a Democrat to the core. He snatched the pamphlet and said you're the problem and walked away.

I'm glad I was wearing this shirt:

That's exactly how I felt. It's my favorite shirt...

4. I thought the same thing...
and he did haul ass down the driveway. He reminded me of what Rush Limbaugh would have been like at the age. He was bouncing and talking a mile a minute. There's a video out there of Rush at a conservative thingy and he was bouncing while he was talking...it was just like that.

cafepress.com a couple years ago...the picture I used is from zazzle.com so I guess you can get it there too.

My other favorite shirt says...

I'm not a bitch

I'm THE BITCH

And it's MRS. BITCH to you.

I own the word...I look at like I'm doing something right if you feel you need to call me that. I got that at a local farmer's market.

Here in Texas it's legal to shoot pretty much anything you disagree with. Typically you shoot first to wound, then while the varmint is on the ground walk up and...oh, just kidding.

Perry/Palin in 2012 because who needs science, logic and rationality?

Historic corporate profits and the Bush tax breaks extended for the rich. Plus he caved on the public health option and looks like he's willing to let the republicans gut social security and medicare. If Ronald Reagan were still alive he would be jealous.

19. I got that EXACT spiel from some young girl about 2 weeks ago.
Edited on Wed Aug-17-11 04:41 PM by denverbill
She'd been trained pretty well on the sales pitch. She opened with the bit about my neighbor 'Evelyn' said I was really nice. After her long spiel and my rejection she asked if any of my other neighbors were nice. I said they all were. I realized later she was hoping I've give out some names so she could personalize her pitch.

Like the article said, I don't think this girl was a shyster, but I think she may end up being a victim. I doubt she'll get what she was promised.

26. For the most part yes...
but we do have our share of baggers and idiots. After Obama won the nom in '08 the lady who lives behind me says to me.."I've never voted for Democrats my whole life, but I can't do it now...I can't vote for someone whose name rhymes with a terrorist and is a muslim" I shit you not..she wouldn't vote for Obama because of his name.

I debate a lot on Politics and there's a guy on there that's part of our states tea party. We did end up with Christine "I'm not a witch" O'Donnell" it's mostly the lower part of the state.

25. I finally had to put out a no soliciting and beware of dog sign.
My dogs wouldn't do anything except bolt perhaps, but it helped. For the longest time, we had those kids coming around. They'd usually leave quickly. Once, though, some young guy came to the door, and I always step outside and close the inside door. Anyway, I had taken down my flag earlier in the afternoon, because it started to rain, and it was rolled up on its pole next to my door. The kid gives me his spiel and I said, "Look, I have enough magazines. I don't need anymore." He gave me sort of a hard look and said "why is your flag rolled up, are you not proud of your country?" I almost decked him in the head. As I stepped back inside I said "It rained this afternoon. You're not supposed to leave your flag out in the rain." Little jerk.

I got into several arguments with Republican door-to-door folks, too. I guess the previous tenants were Republicans. Telling them I'm a socialist is always a joy.

I did the same thing and I'm still harangued by Mormons and a slew of political activists and salesmen, all bearing brands I don't care for (except the rare Democratic activists coming around).

I was considering concertina wire mixed with claymore mines, but figure that might be a little over the top. j/k

promoting local Democratic official, quoting Marx, etc. The Mexican flag visible through my blinds might help too.
The Mormons got me at my old address. They were relentless. My husband gave them the who and what for and they never returned. We're agnostics, so they're wasting their time with us.

Actually, these magazine sales people - please help me, I'm a student and I'm in this contest is most likely a scam.

They atake some money up front and you nebver see them again.

I turned down the kid at my door and then noticed a man with a blue shirt and kackie pants and the shirt said "POLICE" on it.

They grilled the kid for over an hour and then transferred him to a van and they disappeared.

Next time, don't take the chance - send him away and notify the police.

They only take minutes to show up.

He just wouldn't leave. I didn't have the door open, and I was home with two little kids. He got angry that I wouldn't open the door, and started shouting and cussing. And wouldn't leave.

Not on my property, not without me calling the police on him. I don't have to listen to that.

46. One of my very good friends got sucked into Kirby once
Scam company from beginning to end. But it's not the kids that are fucked up. These companies are predatory and tend to use a fast, hard sell on those who are young, desperate, disadvantaged, and have few resources to investigate the people they're going to work for.

Showing them the scam doesn't help, though. As with oh so many young and impressionable teens, they have to actually experience the scam for themselves before they'll believe you. My friend who got sucked into Kirby was one such. I pulled up page after page online with people talking about how truly awful Kirby is and he didn't believe me until they had worked him 50+ hours a week for no pay. Then he dropped it like a hot rock.

It was truly amazing, the change that came over him when he realized how badly he'd been played. And, oh, the hilarity when they tried to come after him for some sort of contract breach or some such- I spoke to them (he was staying with me following this) and told them that if they ever called or knocked again I'd call the police, send my friend to the local DA, get him to tell both the police and the prosecutor what the company had done (taking all his paperwork he had left with him) and nail the owner's ass right to the wall.

Neither of us ever heard from or saw them again. Funny, that.

42. My favorite tee for those situations says "I'd Rather Be Masturbating"
Politics aside that kid is more victim than provocateur. The last time I was confronted with that situation, (fortunately I wasn't wearing the shirt) the seller was a very pretty young teen girl, well-spoken and clearly very bright. She had a remarkable sales pitch delivery for someone her age.

I told her as much as she made me want to buy I wasn't going to. Then I told her why. "Look you are being exploited, you are not being paid fairly for your work, and this gig may actually end up costing you money. And trust me, you will never sell enough magazines to get that trip...they will make sure you don't." Then I told her that she had a natural sales ability and should be using that talent in a more legitimate environment. Finally I asked her to ask her boss if he thought that sending a pretty teenage girl out selling door-to-door after dark is a good idea.

She listened and then walked off without saying anything...don't know what happened after that.

Our police will definitely answer a 911 call if anybody without a permit shows up wanting to sell
